It's a good thing we limit our attendance to 5-6000 fans per game. Imagine the mayhem if we ever had 100,000 screaming fans like those big schools do... I have to agree with this post. Maybe not the sarcasm, but the intent. On one hand we are complaining that the crowd is too quiet and on the other we are complaining about the sound of the band. I understand that you want to be quiet for the offense, but they aren't playing that loud to where they can't hear. You can damn near hear a pin drop.

I give credit to SCSU's 101 for something they have done since the beginning of time and a lot of FBS bands do as well (LSU, USC, UM, OSU, Texas to name just a few) which is play a very short snippet of their fight song right after first downs, big offensive plays, defensive stops, kick returns, and what not during the course of a game instead of entire songs. They have used a field spotter to tell their directors when to hit it in between plays since way back in the late 60's.
Its a classy touch they've always had.

Haze you obviously didn't see our qb and bench players turn around and motion for the band to stop playing? Besides, it's an NCAA rules violation for the band to continue playing after the teams have broken the huddle. I realize that's a tougher task these days when a lot of teams don't huddle anymore but the rules are the rules. As far as I'm concerned the band can blow non-stop until the team walks up to the line of scrimmage then it's time to tone it down. Anyways it's not my intent to turn this minor issue into a bash the band thread as I think there's an obvious remedy to keep everyone content.

Texas Southern "OCEAN of Soul" has also does this well, they play snippets in between plays, Chants to get the fans and Football Team Fired up! Being an Alumnus of "THE BLUE & GOLD MARCHING MACHINE" I will agree, it is a problem and needs to be corrected, I will forward an email of concern to Dr. Ruff and also bring this issue up in "THE ALUMNI BAND MEETING" I think they definitely should play more snippets in between plays and chants. AGGIE PRIDE!

My biggest pet peeve wasn't the band.... it was (and has been) the level of intensity of the fans.
Aside from the band noise and seeing blue & gold colors in the stands, there really isn't an intimidation factor or home-field advantage by playing at Aggie Stadium. When the defense needs to hear extended cheering on big 3rd/4th downs or the offense needs some boost on those short yardage situations.... we should be yelling our heads off. Instead... near silence.
This is especially true from the reserved section right where the players are.... folks are a little too "wine-and-cheese" in that middle section.
I would recommend the following:
- Take the first 3-4 rows of reserve seats from the 30-yard line to the 30-yard line on BOTH sides of the field and make those student "spirit" sections..... make one a "Blue" Section and one a "Gold" Section. Hopefully this can create a noise "engine" that will inspire the rest of the crowd. It will also help fill up the Away side and put a little intimidation factor behind the opposing bench. - Have the athletic department provide etiquette coaching on when/how to cheer for specific game situations for all fans.
If you want to change to a culture of winning, you have to try some different approaches.
We cheer our loudest AFTER the team scores or makes a great play. The reality is that the team's psyche would benefit from us cheering our loudest DURING the most critical moments. That takes a good bit of energy and passion to sustain for 60 minutes. IMO, the best way to do that is the incorporation of our younger Aggies to make it happen in the most critical area... the sidelines....
Thoughts?

While you're in the habit of emailing folks about this particular issue, let's go ahead and email some high-up folks about the woeful state of our practice field, which only gets worse and worse every season. While the notion of the band playing at games has generated a lot of traffic on this site in the past couple days, we are over here trying to figure out how to keep our kids out of the emergency room for corneal abrasions, asthmatic reactions, and a host of other health-related concerns as a result of literally rolling around in a dust bowl for five hours a day. I swear, we could go to Macy's or win the Honda, and folks would still find something about the band to complain about... Attachments:

Arranger,
Sounds like you need to take that to the administration. I don't believe there are any decision-makers here. It is presumptive to think we don't care, and no one is blaming the band for a loss. I think the concern is no one wants to blame the band for a loss in the future due to the band playing when they should not be.

Arranger, from the statements that I've read, none of the comments indicate picking a fight with the band, everyone here love the band and appreciate the perfection and winning mentality that the band has. The band always fill us with pride, and is something that we look forward to seeing anywhere ( street, stands, or field). This is an issue that was thought to be a quick fix by bringing it to the attention of you and other leaders of the band. Like others here I can watch and listen to BGMM for hours even during the game, but there is still this small issue as a football fan that need attention for the rest of the season.

These complaints have a way of coming up after every loss. lol. If anything, the band should be playing MORE snippets at critical points in the game - 3rd down conversions, interceptions, etc.

Just making sure this influx of traffic on this site is not related to the band's sound, the look of Golden Delight, the precision of Cold Steel, the addition of the new staff members, or the innovative strides being made, but rather the contention that football players, who practice every day over many years, just can't get the hang of performing under pressure. God forbid any of them make it to he NFL.
We'll work on the changes. Since this is the most pertinent issue plaguing the band today, we will make it a priority as we do every year around this time...

Erika Badu Mr. Jones , sir , no one is bashing or trying to pick a fight with the BGMM . We are all aware of the shortcomings and limitations that you guys face ,yet still manage to put out a superior product ,time and time again . We are all aware of the fact that your practice facility is a converted warehouse , and your practice field is a parking lot . As most of us have stated we would love to hear you play as much as you want , the only issue is lowering the volume when our team comes to the line of scrimmage . That's it and nothing more ,believe me we can go on for 20 or 30 pages on this site about little or nothing else , so this discussion is very minor compared to some of the other stuff .

Hmm interesting discussion. I agreed with both points of views. Having marched in the band for 5 years and also an avid football fan. At times when I marched, especially as a drum major, I made sure to let the band know to keep an eye out for the game and to just be aware. I want to see my Aggies win and I definitely don't want the band to be a hint of blame

Dude, stop crying and acting like a victim. The Machine gets universal praise on this site and Golden Delight gets treated like rock stars.
Folks have just made a few observations that the band sometimes plays at inopportune times during the games. Some have suggested ways in which the machine can work to assist the team on the field and not become a distraction.
I don't understand why you have such a hard time with handling outside feedback about this issue.
