Budget: Close Elizabeth City StateN.C. Senate proposal targets 'unprofitable' campus Published Thursday, May 29, 2014 1:19 pm by Herbert L. White The N.C. Senate’s proposed $21 billion budget would have the University of North Carolina system shut down “small, unprofitable” Elizabeth City State University. ECSU, a historically black school in the northeast corner of the state, reports an enrollment of 2,421, including 2,155 full-time students. Among its students, 1,777 are black, 380 are white, according to the school’s website. North Carolina residents account for 2,163 students and the average SAT score is 889. Shots fired. There is setting up to be a huge battle with Tom Ross and the Board of Regents of the UNC system over this. If the Republicans can get their hooks into ECSU then its open season on the rest of us.

Well it looks like the NC Republicans have gotten their first HBCU victim. Trust me, if ECSU goes and there's no big protests and riots in the street, they will target another one after that. And they will keep whittling them down until there are no more HBCU's. Because in the warped minds of the Republicans, the world is totally integrated and there's no further need for an HBCU institution. We's free now and can go anywhere so why do we need an HBCU?

So where does ECSU stand now? This popped up several weeks ago, got a lot of buzz and now it's gone silent. Usually when this happens, there's some shady hsit going on behind closed doors that "they" don't want the public to see. Can anyone let me know where this stands now?

The proposal to study closure was taken out of the Senate's budget proposal. I have heard anything about the House's budget proposal. Watch the budget reconciliation process and see what comes from it. What ECSU needs to be doing right now is focusing on it's Chancellor search, last minute recruiting of community college graduates/transfers and engaging alumni through the end of the fiscal year. Btw...has all of BDF made a contribution to the annual giving campaign??? (Annual Fund, AAF, Alumni Scholars, etc...)
