The mayor of Charlotte, N.C. -- the state's largest city and the site of the 2012 Democratic National Convention -- was arrested Wednesday on public corruption charges and accused of taking bribes after an FBI sting.
Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon, a 47-year-old Democrat, is facing theft and bribery charges, U.S. Attorney Anne Tompkins said. Cannon is accused of soliciting and accepting bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as real estate developers who wanted to do business in Charlotte.
According to the U.S. attorney's office, the FBI first learned that he may have been involved in illegal activities years ago and started an investigation in 2010.
During the course of that probe, the mayor allegedly accepted bribes from undercover FBI agents on five separate occasions, in exchange for access to city officials responsible for planning, zoning and permitting.
A damn Aggie grad!!!

Big Egos and quick money. A rotten combination. A promising polictical career thrown out the window for a paltry 20 grand.
Pathetic.

Well let me be clear to all my Blue Death friends and A&T Alumni...if you ever hear about me stealing money and it's less than what Bernie Maddoff stole, I've been setup and framed. If you're going to steal (I'm not recommending it) steal big. At least when you go to jail you're a legend. This guy lost it all for just enough money to buy a late model BMW!

I hope he gets whatever is coming to him. I look at past black Charlotte mayors like Gant and Foxx. These dudes paved the way for him to keep things moving in the right direction. He's in a city that continues to excel. Ole dude blew it; he probably has blown it for many young black politicians in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg county area. You all know we are grouped together.
When one of us gets caught up in bullisht like this, WE ALL ARE BRANDED. I don't think he realizes how bad he has made himself and others look. Good luck to any young black politician in Charlotte (especially a brotha) in their hopes to be the future mayor of Charlotte. Cannon may have just blown it for you.

Big Egos and quick money. A rotten combination. A promising polictical career thrown out the window for a paltry 20 grand. Pathetic. It was actually $48k and he was posturing himself for $1 million dollars on the next payout. Still stupid thing to do. My wife is on his staff and she says she came out of a meeting only to see him being escorted by the Feds. First Jesse Jr and now Pat Cannon. Aggie politicians must do better.

It started while he was on the city council. They've been stringing him along for awhile. This ordeal is downright depressing....

This day and age the brother should have seen this coming. If people are coming at you with all kinds of offers of money you should just assume that something is not right. I guess he was not as smart as he thought he was!!

I hate the fact that they had enough evidence to convict the man 2 years ago, but they waited until after he wont the election to really seal the deal.
This has nothing to do with Black Politicians. Ive seen plenty of folks commenting on the fact that he messed it up for a certain demographic. His actions dont represent anyone but his own selfish intentions.
I wish they would check out every elected official, but instead the media will circus this act until Charlotte gets another mayor.
There are bigger issues at hand in North Carolina.

"This has nothing to do with Black Politicians"
You may want to rethink that statement.

From WBTV: www.wbtv.com/story/25096036/former-fbi-cia-officials-weigh-in-on-cannon-investigationFormer FBI, CIA officials weigh in on Cannon investigationPosted: Mar 27, 2014 10:24 PM EDT Updated: Mar 27, 2014 10:24 PM EDT By David Spunt CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Things were quiet outside former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon's house Thursday night, but the investigation is well underway. WBTV spoke to a retired FBI agent and former CIA analyst about the case, to understand what may be going on behind the scenes. WBTV spoke to retired FBI agent Randy Walker. He worked for the bureau for 21 years, investigating white collar crime and managing polygraph tests. Walker also did undercover work, similar to the Cannon case. Walker says there are likely two reasons FBI agents waited until after Cannon became Mayor to make their move. "The investigation might have not been concluded. Whether or not they were looking at additional people that might have been involved and even the affidavit talks about him dealing with people in the administration trying to get things done," Walker said. Walker says the second reason for the timing of the arrest is straightforward and simple. "The FBI does not want to affect the political process as going through the campaign. They wouldn't want to arrest him and being then accused of affecting a political process of taking down a potential candidate," he said. On Wednesday, FBI agents left Cannon's home with computers and other electronics. "What a gold mine of information," said former CIA computer...(It would have been nice if he had finished this sentence!) Walton is also an attorney and runs his own business in Charlotte called Reliance Forensics. He says Cannon's cell phone and iPad could potentially carry even more dirty laundry. "The more recent ones (Apple products) are more difficult for forensic investigators to pull data from. If you're talking about a Droid, it's very easy to pull deleted data. It's very easy to often extract passwords and things like that," he said. Copyright 2014 WBTV.
