My son is a Sr. in High School; over the past 6-months we have done campus tours at several colleges. Our HBCU's have to revamp their campus tours if we want to attract more high quality stundents. My son has a good GPA 3.4 and a pretty good SAT score 1590 so he had options.
My son was accepted at the following schools which we toured:
Prarie View Univ. Of Houston Texas Tech Southern Louisanna Lafayette
Unfortuanely the tours at our HBCU's left alot to be desired. We had a tour schedled at PV but ended up doing a walking tour on our on since no tour guide was avaliable. The tour at Southern was embarrasing and only lasted 10 minutes. The advisor ask the student to complete the tour cause she was tired and her feet hurt...LOL Needles to say my son was not impressed. The other 3 schools had real tours; and inform student took us on a walking tour pointing out campus facts, focused on student life, dorm tour, as well as an overview of various schools.
I truly hope our tours at T are well organized. My son chose Louisanna Lafayette - Petroleum Eng. and got a partial scholarship (enough to cover out state fees as we live in Texas).

thefriscotxaggie, I'm glad your son found a school that he liked. And a special congratulations to you (and your spouse) for making sure he had the focus and drive to get the necessary grades to get in. Unfortunately I hear the same complaints from other parents that interact with "some" HBCUs. I don't think you will find this level of incompetence on all HBCUs but you will find it on some. And those same HBCUs will be the first to complain when their enrollment goes down and their funding is reduced.
All HBCUs are faced with some big issues...those that figure out how to thrive and compete in this environment will be around in the future and those that don't will become a footnote during Black History Month.
By the way, if he had a tour scheduled on A&T campus, it would have been done and done professionally.

Its good to hear our tours are done professionally. I cant believe how bad some of the tours were when this is a perspective student / parents first interaction in many cases with the school.
This is one of those area that requires little from an investment standpoint..... I am always preaching about HBCU's and was embarrased at Southern.

A&T does a great job with the tours. Also the three day event for all incoming freshmen is great. Alot of information and good quality students as well as the staff lead the events. They also incoporate a few things from the student body (pep relly style). i can't remember the name of the group (students) that are considered the student leaders, but they are hand picked.
Congrats on your son's accomplishment.

Petroleum engineering? Yowsers! Congrats to your son and especially the parents. It will be tough but don't let him get discouraged. Great field, great money and you're already in the right location. Get your popcorn ready, its going to be a fun ride lol
