FOOTBALL COACH, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR RELEASED AT FAMU
University president announces personnel moves at Tuesday press conference
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Nov. 20) – Florida A&M University President James H. Ammons announced changes in the institution’s athletic department during a Tuesday afternoon press conference.
Ammons announced that athletic director Nelson Townsend had submitted his resignation, effective Tuesday morning, and that head football coach Rubin Carter, was given a “notice of non-reappointment and employment separation.”
Townsend will be on paid administrative leave until February 12, 2008, his last day of employment. Carter will also be placed on paid administrative leave until April 22, 2008.
“I am appreciative of the tremendous work Mr. Townsend and Coach Carter have done during the period when we were working to address NCAA sanctions,” said Ammons. “Now we want to move in a new direction with the athletics program. I’m moving forward with the hiring process.”
Ammons went on to say that the positions would be filled by the end of the year.
•Townsend was appointed athletic director in December of 2005, beginning his second tour as AD in January 2006. He had over 30 years experience in athletic and education administration, including a previous stint at FAMU from 1986 through 1987. He also served two tours at Maryland-Eastern Shore, as well as stints at Delaware State and the University of Buffalo.
•Carter came on board as head football coach in July of 2005, compiling a 16-17 record in three seasons. He posted back-to-back winning seasons in 2005 (6-5) and 2006 (7-4), before this year’s 3-8 campaign. An All-American defensive lineman at the University of Miami, Carter played 12 seasons in the National Football League with Denver, before starting a 21-year coaching career that covered both the professional and collegiate ranks.
He also met with the athletic staff and coaches Tuesday morning, announcing that Allen Bogan, longtime faculty member and one-time assistant football coach, would serve as interim athletic director until a permanent director is hired.
•Bogan began his association with FAMU in 1974, when he joined the athletic and health and physical education staff. A 1967 graduate of Ohio University, Bogan was an assistant football coach under Rudy Hubbard (1974-85), Ken Riley (1986-93) and Billy Joe (1994-2004).
He is also an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He holds a masters degree from Youngstown State University and has done doctoral degree work at Florida State University and the United States Sports Academy.

Veteran coach and professor Samuel Allen Bogan, has been named Interim Director of Athletics at Florida A&M by University President James H. Ammons, it was announced Tuesday.
Bogan is a veteran of the Florida A&M sports scene, having come to the university in 1974.
Allen Bogan served 30 seasons on the Rattler Football coaching staff from 1974 through the 2004 season.
He is currently an assistant professor in Health, Physical Education and Recreation at FAMU.
The personable Buckeye State native will again tutor the FAMU running backs this season, a position with which he’s intimately familiar, having starred as a running back and receiver for Ohio University.
Bogan, a 1967 graduate of Ohio University, also holds a master’s from his hometown Youngstown (Ohio) State University (1972).
He has also done further postgraduate work at Florida State University, Nova (Fla.) University and the United States Sports Academy.
The versatile Bogan served under three head football coaches at FAMU, Rudy Hubbard (1974-85), Ken Riley (1986-1993) and Billy Joe (1994-2004).
During his 30-year tour, Florida A&M captured three Black College National titles in football (1977, 1978 and 1998), won 10 conference titles, while making 10 postseason appearances.
•Under Rudy Hubbard (1974-85), Bogan served as Offensive Coordinator and line coach (1974-78), Defensive Coordinator and linebacker coach (1979-83), before returning to the offensive line (1984-85).
•During the Ken Riley Era (1986-93), Bogan had worked stints with the secondary and the offensive line.
•Under Coach Billy Joe (1994-2004, Bogan tutored the running backs, developing their talents in three phases - as a runner, receiver and blocker.
His nearly three decades of experience proved extremely valuable to the Rattlers, as was the last connection to their previous national championship teams of 1977 and 1978.
Four of his former players - including the late College Hall of Fame guard Tyrone McGriff (Pittsburgh) were drafted by National Football League teams.
Bogan and his wife, Lillie, are the parents of one son, Scott Allen.
