FAMU loses head coach and director
Posted: 11/19/07
Both FAMU football head coach Rubin Carter and athletic director Nelson Townsend were dismissed from the university by President James Ammons following closed door discussions this afternoon.
Carter and Townsend were hired under former interim president Castell Bryant's tenure nearly two years ago. Nelson will be leaving after serving his second stint as athletic director for FAMU.
FAMU finished the regular season 3-8 overall and 2-6 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, with its last loss coming from the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats at this weekend's Walt Disney World Florida Classic.

This is not a shocker. FAMU has a rich football tradition and them folks cant accept losing seasons. Hell Rubin went 6-4 his first year and 7-3 last season. They finished 3-8 this year and promptly showed him AND THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR the door. But Aggies want to wallow in mediocrity....scratch that....mediocrity would be at least winning a handful of games. This MOFO hasn't won a conference or nonconference game in the two years since he's been at A&T and Todd hired his non experienced a$$ because Doug Williams told her to...and with that some of yall are satisfied. SIGH.......
Congrats FAMU...now go get yourselve's someone who will elevate your program and has the proven track record of doing so.

This is a bad turn of events as far as Dee and Fobbs are concerned. Now a precedent has been set.

This is a bad turn of events as far as Dee and Fobbs are concerned. Now a precedent has been set. Naw partner...because if we were really proactive instead of reactive to what FAMU does, then Battle could have observed what was going on by midseason, done a proper evaluation of the history and importance of the program, sensed the growing frustration of one of the most loyal fanbases in Black college sports, and would have been ready to strike as soon as the season was over....kind of like FAMU did. The point is if we are going to make any damn moves then make them already and stop shuffling feet. Be proactive and have a list ready to go. Michigan's AD said they had a list of 20 CANDIDATES READY TO CONTACT AFTER CARR CALLED IT QUITS. Thats an administration that is ready to reconstruct the rich tradition of Michigan football IMMEDIATELY. Unfortunately and sadly, I don't think we are that smart and that proactive. We will eff around and continue to allow the sheeet to fester and boil over until it becomes a complete mess...as if we aren't at that point already.

UAPB has already named their new coach.
We're not even going to get rid of ours. There's really no positive in keeping him. At his age he's not going to stick around long anyway.
Such is life...

Freeze, Coach Carter worked miracles under these circumstances.NCAA TO IMPOSE ACADEMIC SANCTIONS ON FAMU ATHLETICS Athletic program to lose scholarships due to results of 2004-05 APR ratings released Wednesday FAMU AD Nelson Townsend said that changes are already in progress to address academic issues. March 1, 2006 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The NCAA announced Wednesday that the Florida A&M University athletic program will lose additional scholarships as a result of its' performance in the 2004-05 Academic Progress Report, released Wednesday. The report annually rates the overall academic performance of an institution's athletic program, covering issues including retention rates, academic progress as well as graduation rates. Florida A&M, is already in the midst of restructuring its' internal athletic operations after being placed on four years' probation February 1, following an NCAA ruling charging them with of lack of institutional control. FAMU Athletic Director Nelson Townsend responded Wednesday by saying: "This ruling simply means we have not done a good job in the academic area with our student-athletes. If we care enough to recruit our athletes, we need to care enough to make sure they graduate. "This (the APR) is something I'm in favor of because we as institutions need to put just as much effort into encouraging our student-athletes to succeed academically as we do competitively, and we are moving at all deliberate speed to make the necessary improvements here at Florida A&M." Wednesday's ruling by the NCAA will result in a loss of scholarships in baseball (1.07), football (8), men's basketball (1), men's swimming (0.99) and women's swimming (1.23) for the 2006-07 school year. Previous NCAA sanctions The NCAA said that the loss of eight football scholarships will be separate and in addition to penalties previously leveled against Florida A&M.Those previous restrictions included the loss of scholarships in the current 2005-06 academic year - football (6), baseball (3), women's swimming (2), men's swimming (2), women's track (2), men's tennis (1.5), men's track (1), women's basketball (1), men's basketball (1) and bowling (1). Scholarship reductions already slated to go into effect for the coming 2006-07 school year included two (2) in football, and one (1) each in women's track and men's track. Football is the only sport affected by the February 1 ruling beyond 2006-07, with the loss of three (3) scholarships in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

MODIFIED: FAMU Athletics Placed on 4 Years' Probation By Nick Birdsong Black College Wire
Rubin Carter, Florida A&M University's football head coach, sat somewhat restlessly at a Feb. 1 news conference alongside Mike Gillespie, the men's head basketball coach. They awaited the NCAA's final decision on more than 200 violations in all-university sports from 1998 to 2004.
The verdict:
The NCAA's Division 1 Committee on Infractions has placed the athletic department on four years' probation ending Jan. 31, 2010, among other penalties. The 10-member committee cited a "lack of institutional control," in addition to the violations.
The committee also found "insufficient evidence" to support an allegation against former head football coach Billy Joe, who was removed from his position in June. Joe has filed suit against the university. At the time of his dismissal, the winningest coach in school history had two years left on his contract, at an annual base salary of $135,000.
Part of the punishment is a reduction in grants and aid to all FAMU sports, newly appointed Athletic Director Nelson Townsend announced.
Football was hit hardest, losing 14 grants in all. Six have already been taken away. The remaining eight are to be subtracted over the next three years, ending at the conclusion of the 2008-09 season.
As a result of the penalties, practice time for the football team is to be reduced by 20 hours.
The violations surfaced after an earlier investigation, prompting the university to hastily enact a harsh self-imposed penalty, cutting numerous scholarships and prohibiting post-season play.
In the aftermath of that discovery, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) stripped FAMU of 11 conference titles.
Townsend credited Interim FAMU President Castell V. Bryant for working in conjunction with NCAA officials to reduce the self-imposed penalty to "what we would consider realistic to the crime that had been committed.
"Even though the penalties are serious, they by no means rank in accordance with the self-imposed penalties that you heard in the past," said Townsend.
"And the dreaded results many of us hesitantly looked forward to did not become a reality."
A feeling of relief resonated throughout the cramped room.
"This really helped our program move forward," said Carter of the new ruling.
"The loss of 28 scholarships would have been athletic suicide. We never would have been able to survive that. Football would have been dead."
The previous penalties had affected recruiting.
On Feb. 1, national signing day for college football, the Rattlers inked 21 prep prospects for next year's squad.
The violations were a result of what the NCAA described as an understaffed and inadequately funded compliance department under former compliance director Jonathan Evans.
The entire department has been revamped since. Evans has been replaced by Marilyn Jones, a former official in the University of South Carolina's athletic department.
The department's staff includes a compliance coordinator and four athletic advisers.
Townsend also said the university will be holding compliance training sessions for the entire athletic department.

Ammons canned the AD and HC at Central when he first got there. I believe it's more of a political move than an move to improve the "Athletics Department" (at least canning the AD). The AD is considered part of the President's (Chancellor's) cabinet. Most want to surround themselves with "their people" right or wrong that is what they do.

Look, I'm not saying that FAM was justified, I'm saying that I believe that Ammons did not operate without serious pressure from alumni to remove a coach and an AD that they believed were not the answers to FAMU's problems. Those folks are serious about their football down there and wont tolerate mediocrity on the field. You can say that they acted too rash and that the sanctions were taking their hold on the program, but the bottom line is that Carter and the AD are gone, gone, gone because of failure to perform. And if you buy into the "harsh conditions" excuse...then what does that say about our program and our coach who has great facilties, an increased recruiting budget, and the highest salary in Aggie football history and one of the most competitive salaries in 1-AA football, no sanctions to worry about....and STILL HASN"T WON A GAME IN TWO DAMN YEARS. To add injury to insult...FAMU won two games this year in the sorry a$$ MEAC....all while suffering from sanctions.

Naw. Not that Ammons wouldn't like to have him, but Bill's never left NC in his life other than that year or two in Gretna, VA.

IF we do move to make this change. Its needs to be fast. If I recall correctly we didn't fobbs until very late with little time to recruit.

Fobbs came on officially on January 1 but the hiring was announced I think a week after Thanksgiving. Not to mention we still had three guys here recruiting the whole time.
I really don't think it has to be all that fast, it just has to be the right one. We did it fast when we hired Fobbs and we did it wrong. We did it slow when we hired Small and we did it wrong. There's two common threads here. Us, and wrong.
How bad can recruiting suffer? We haven't won a game in two and a half years.

We haven't won a game in two and a half years. I just became very depressed. The only cure is a press conference.
