What coaches lorded over the MEAC? Willie Jefferies, Billy Joe, Joe Taylor and Bill Hayes. All four had strong connections to HBCUs. They all have beaten more often than not their so-called new blood coaches who had little to no connection to HBCU.
We criticized these men for losing to predominately white schools without considering the enormous budget constraint, bumbling administrations, foul mouth empty pockets alumni and racial prejudice in recruiting that these coaches were saddled with in their tenure.
Currently there are fans who still hate Billy Joe and Bill Hayes, two tremendous coaches who were bounced unceremoniously but that is the business and profession they chose to be in so no need to cry.
Big schools can get away with firing a legend because they can pay top dollar for a proven coach who are younger most of the time. HBCU try to play big school and end up no where because they get rid of a well seasoned coach with tons of connections for an unknown and drop him into a underfunded program.
Next time an HBCU administration hire a new coach it would be wise to find one that has most of the traits of the four coaches I have mentioned above and then give him championship-type money to win championships.

Yeah, the Bill Hayes thing is crippling us. He won games with that small budget and now we realize that should have been appreciated more. I would just like for our next coach to have some, at least a little, head coaching experience somewhere on the college level. The money puzzle, evidently, is too complex to solve at this point.

It has always been a knock on hcbu's that we cant be the PWC's. I dont agree with that totally. A & T has had sucess again W. Carolina, Appalachain, Liberty, Elon, just off the top of my head. Tenessee state finished the year ranked #1 few years ago as well and they play in a PWC's conference. FAMU if i recall was one minute away from the 1-aa championships a few years back. Although Hampton has not had sucess(won a playoff game) they have fielded competitive teams. someone has to win the game. There are more PWC's that dont have sucess in the playoffs but we dont speak of them because we group them all together as a cohesive unit(PWC's). Dont forget appalachian was in the same boat until about 2-3 years ago. A & T's problem recently is stability. Someone needs to be in it for the long haul. Someone capable.

Eddie Robinson was big, look at Grambling now. A&T, I think, is just suffering the consequences of the G. Small firing. We'll kick some butt next year. We will continue to rebuild! You got to give it a chance. In the world of HBCUs, nothing occurs over-night.

No, we are suffering the consequences of the Lee Fobbs hiring.
But next year we'll win. It's the close games and the year after next that will be problems.
