BC doesn't have a choice unless they leave the conference.
I don’t like the financial risk of the Classics (except the Circle City). Look at the travel debacle for the LA trip. A similar thing happened in Vegas. I’m not convinced that we received full payment for Vegas. Alcorn still owes us a return game for the Chicago fiasco. Hell, we are still owed money for the defunct Aggie/Eagle Classic. We turned down the Whitney Young Classic this year because the pay-out was less than what we expected to get for our home game with Hampton. As a fan these are great events, but are we getting paid more than if were a home game?
Playing D-1’s at the current state of our program would be and outright disaster. We aren’t ready for that level of competition. But I’m not opposed to that when we get at least to the level of DSU or SCSU. But that takes continuity in all phases of the program, student-athletes, coaching, funding, attendance, donations, marketing, etc. on up and down the line year in and year out.
I don’t see playing Central as a bad thing. If we had been 2-1, going into that game we would have turned people away. I think playing them early in the season nets an easy $300k. That’s another reason I’m opposed to the playing them later in the season. People talk about the records to don’t matter, let the temperature drop below 40 degrees and one of the team is 3-8, 2-9 or worst both teams are 2-9, 3-8 and see how many fans come out. You can bet Central is going to have a few 3-8 and 2-9 seasons over the next 10 years.
