my thinking is from an athlete's perspective. nobody likes losing their season opening game, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. i'm betting the coaches feel the same way too. perhaps the only good thing about losing to coastal last week is that it leaves a "tad bit" of doubt in our players mind that maybe we're not as good as we think we are. as a result, i don't think our guys will take this wvsu team lightly.
had we beaten the living snot out of coastal last week, our players' mindset would be a lot different. they'd probably go into the wvsu game way "overconfident". but the loss kinda "mentally" brings our guys (and our fans) back down to earth.
i guess because i've coached for so many years, i could just see the frustration and disappointment in coach broadway's body language during the press conference. my guess is that this week's practices for the team were probably "amped up" by the coaches. anytime coaches lose a game they feel they should've won, they raise the level of intensity in practice.
there's 2 messages from that approach. message #1, we must work harder than we've been working to ensure we don't make the same mistakes we made in the game that we loss. message #2 (which is the one i like), says anytime we lose a game that we should've won, your azzes is gonna pay for it in practice this week! coaches have a way of making you truly regret losing games you should've won by working the living daylights outta yo azz in practice! there were probably a lot of sore butts going to the dorm after practices this week.
its like coach broadway said in his press conference. he said this week's game (against wvsu) is not about "who" we play. instead, its about "how we play". translation? if we don't eliminate those dayum mistakes we made last week and blow this team out, i'm kicking azz again all next week in practice until we get it right!
right on point, coach broadway! right on...
