2012 A&T Football Prospectus Courtesy NC A&T Sports Information Fri, June 22, 2012
Courtesy NC A&T Sports Information North Carolina A&T head football coach Rod Broadway speaks to the media last season. He enters his second season with the Aggies program. Preseason Aggies Notebook
Running Toward The Record Book...
A two-time All-MEAC selection and the 2011 Co-MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, Mike Mayhew enters the 2012 season 139 yards shy of becoming North Carolina A&T's all-time leading rusher.
For his career, Mayhew is averaging 83.5 yards per game and has 11 100-yard rushing games, so it is conceivable he could have the record, which currently belongs to Maurice Hicks at 2,812 yards, by Game 1 or 2.
Mayhew, the 2009 MEAC Rookie of the Year, is only the second running back in A&T history to put together consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons, joining Hicks. If he rushes for 1,000 yards in 2012, he will be the first Aggie to accomplish the feat and only one of three players in MEAC history to ever to do so.
The Charlotte native is just 10 carries shy of becoming the school's all-time leader in rush attempts as well. He was only one of 25 backs with at least 150 carries in the Football Championship Subdivision to rush for more than 100 yards per game.
Year Two On Broadway
North Carolina A&T head coach Rod Broadway enters his second season at the helm of the Aggies program. If his past is any indication, year two at A&T could be very exciting. In his second year at Grambling State, the Tigers went 11-2 overall, 10-0 in the SWAC and claimed the conference championship. After his first year at N.C. Central, Broadway led the Eagles to an 8-2 season in Durham. It was a four-game improvement from the previous when NCCU went 4-6 in 2003. In Broadway's first year at A&T, the Aggies went 5-6 overall and return 19 starters for the 2012 season.
Postseason
The Aggies will have to wait another year for championship glory. The Aggies will not be eligible for postseason play in 2012 because of a below 925 score on their Academic Progress Rate. There will also be no spring practice for the Aggies in 2013. The upside for the A&T football program is that their full allotment of scholarships were returned, and their yearly APR score rose last academic school year.
A&T Career Rushing Yards

It is amazing that Maurice Hicks only played 2 seasons. He might have been FCS' alltime leading rusher if he had been able to play for 4 full seasons under Hayes' offense. Hell, he might have accomplished that if he had just played 4 games against FAMU's defense!

It will have to be noted with an asterick and a footnote about Hicks' prolific accomplishment in two years. Hicks averaged 140 or 141 yards per game. That's unreal. Mayhew, if healthy will have another terrific year. He has an uncanny ability to change directions, make people miss and pickup good yardage. That's quite a feat. Kudos to him, as he attempts to make his mark in Aggie history.

There is film out there on the FAMU and Hampton games. Would have been nice to have film on the Morgan (with a loss) and SCSU (Charlotte) games.

If Mike Mayhew can average 80yds PG he will have the record and then some!! He will absolutely do that if he can stay healthy. He should have 130+ yards in the VUL and the W. Va. State games by the end of the first half.

In the first two games I would play Mayhew as little as possible are until he get's the record!!! Teams like VUL and W.Va State worry me because they have nothing to lose and may not play to win but to injury someone like Mayhew! Let Mayhew play just to get the rust off and then pull him and get his back ups some playing time ! That's what I would do!!
Also VUL got bigger this year and has hit the Junior colleges ranks hard for size and speed it should be and interesting game this time around!!

If Hicks had not torn his ACL in high school we would never have got to see him play at A&T. He would probably have gone to UVA, that's who was recruiting him at the time. He spent 2 years in Jr. college and we were lucky that Hayes convinced him to come to A&T. Imagine if we could have had him for 4 years, damn, that would have been something to see.

I'll never forget the show Hicks put on against Morgan State when he set the record by rushing for 437 yards in one game which is a tremendous feat particularly since he only played 3 quarters of that game.
