This rule doesn't make sense to me. The offense has the same chance to recover a fumble as a the defense. It would seem that a more equitable solution is for the offense to retain possession at the point of the fumble.
Ncat 2-10 at How13 LEWIS,Ricky rush for 12 yards to the HOW1, fumble forced by GRAHAM,Theodore, fumble by LEWIS,Ricky recovered by HOW TEAM at HOW0, touchback.

I agree ...the rule needs to be change on all levels. If the ball goes out of bounds, it's given back to the team that fumble.

The real question is why was Lewis in and not the MEAC leader Mayhew? Or better yet the #2 back.

The #2 back (D. Drake) did not play due to a concussion he got during the homecoming game. Mayhew has to get a brake, we can't run him to death. Ricky Lewis is a very good RB, and he got the job done, he just fumbled. Mayhew has fumbled the ball on several occasions this season also. Lewis is not only a RB, he is also the #2 QB, slot back, and punt and kickoff returner.

Lewis was the best choice . Things happen . Now it's time to move on to NSU.

I always thought the rule was the ball fumbled out of bounds goes back to the team that had possession.

Remember back in, I beleive 2001, at Del State when Mo Hicks broke free for an apparent TD of about 60 yards, and the Del State defender knocked the ball from his hands as he was about to cross the goal line. The ball went out the back of the end zone for a touchback. That TD would probably have given us the win but we eventually lost the game by, I think about 6 or 7 points. These type fumbles seems to always play a big role in determining the outcome of a game.

I remember that one. The final was like 46-45 or something crazy. I remember in '02 when we beat Jackson State by some circus score at home; their receiver was walking into the end zone by himself and kicked the ball out of his own hands and through the back of the end zone. I knew it was a touchback because I remembered the Del State game from the previous year. We probably would have lost that one had we not gotten that call, so it goes both ways.
That being typed, I don't like the touchback rule, but it makes sense. What if a ball is fumbled by the offense if they are in their own end zone? For example, if they fumble a punt or it's snapped out of the end zone? Or if they are starting at the one and the qb or rb fumbles it in the end zone and it goes out the back? You can't give them the ball in the end zone, so....
