I didn't start until the 4th quarter really because I was in the stands during halftime and 3rd quarter. So the clips posted are from the 4th quarter and after the game. As far as the book is concerned, not to knock Delaware State's band, but they weren't really playing much so no need to go deep into the book. Seems like this year the band is trying to play songs with chants during the game so they don't have to worry about playing full songs that would have to get cut off or something like that. I'm not sure if either of those songs are in the book this year. I didn't hear it when i was in the band room on Friday.

I don't know how it works but once some songs are written and played......they should never leave the book. Thomas had the band rockin last year.......some of his {and some during the Hodge era.....cough cough....SKIN!.......} should always be in there somewhere

Skin used to be our calling card, then I remember always being known for cranking "To Be Real"... What songs do we have stamped now?

A&T band has taken a step back. I was very disappointed, they were much better back in the day(74-78) They play the same old tired songs each year?

"They play the same old tired songs each year?" ....
bigpeete1 I have bad news for you...thats not much different than the way we have always been lol
Honestly the entire time I marched, we played the exact same songs for YEARS ...prior to my arrival, the whole time I was there and for years once I was on staff. In fact, during that time, we did a lot of repeating FIELD SHOWS. I did Africa to America at least three times, made North Carolina at least 4 different years, etc. Not to discredit that AT ALL...thats who we were AND WE LOVED IT! AND WERE GOOD AT IT. AND HAD A BALL DOING IT...
All I seek to lift in this post is that for the last two to three years I have heard alums and fans get on sites, send emails and talk about the current BGMM...and a lot of what they say HAS ALWAYS APPLIED TO THE BGMM... LMAO!! Its all about perspective.
For example... "they need to tune.." So did we. "They dont seem to have energy...its homecoming!" Uhhhmmm neither did we... and we werent sober either lol
I guess those "we were the greatest band back in MY day" comments rub me wrong because BOTH versions of the band had its strengths and weaknesses. Now I can't comment on 74-78 because trust I was just being born lol BUT I do study the history of my program and can say that its one of the best in HBCU bands THEN and NOW. Of that I am extremely proud.
Its an odd year. Get over it. (all BGMM members and alums know what Im talking about hahahaha) Cant figure it out but thats just the history of the machine over the last 10-12 years or so. while we have never been horrible...the idea of "taking a step back" has plagued the BGMM for years as being consistent (about presenting above average, stellar performances, with an immaculate well balanced sound from year to year) has been an issue from Carlson, to Hodge to Ruff.
I would say part of this is the fluctuation in sections from year to year. Having a strong bone section in the 1990's and early 2000's to only have 9 or 10. Having a strong Tuba section to placing our 10 in front of 32 of BCC's a few years ago to being back to our solid 16-18...Consistency has to begin with each section, each year.
As far as song selection, we purposefully mix things up. 2011 was about bringing some old classics back and fusing them with the new for the current A&T student population and team. We will never reach a time when everyone agrees on the book. LOL. If we do, Im heading straight for the church because that means the end is near.

Only thing I have to ask is....where are the O'Jaysand Shai from last year ? They should be the new staple songs in the book. "Used to be my Girl" and "If I Ever Fall In Love" are brilliant in the 5th quarter. That's my only issue.

Every generation looks back at their time at A&T and thinks it was better then. The football team was more talented, the band performed better and the game atmosphere was livelier. I heard it from A&T alums in the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's and I'm hearing it now. In the words of Bill Cosby,"Come on people!" Stop your complaining and whinning. We have enough "outsiders" taking shots at us, we don't need our fans always complaining too. Things are not perfect but what is?

I have heard A&T bands since the 60's and this years band is as good as they have ever been, maybe even better. When you take into consideration that the vast majority of these students that are members of the band are not even on scholarship, and still continue to come out every year and work as hard as they do, hell we owe them all the props in the world. Great job B&GMM!!!!
