RALEIGH — N.C. A&T would buy the Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA as part of a plan to expand its engineering school under a deal that top state officials are expected to approve Tuesday. As outlined in a document prepared for the Council of State — a 10-member panel that includes the governor — the university will eventually use the property to build a 2,500-square-foot classroom building. I would hope that they keep the YMCA close to the community where it is now located and not move it out. Hayes-Taylor is almost part of the life blood of that area. We all grow up playing ball at Hayes-Taylor.

The News and record says its 25,000 sq ft classroom building. I think this is a good move for the college of engineering.

My understanding is they will move to lee street and florida street , next to Barber park. They will remain at the present location for up to two years while the new building is being built.

Finally! The Y has been trying to sell that property for the past 3+ years. Membership for that location has been on a serious decline for some time now and they wanted to move it closer to the people that use their services.
I know A&T wanted that location and the land the old Post Office sat upon however for whatever reasons, we just couldn't get a plan off the ground and now Daddy Grace and Co. own that land.
All that is now left really is to buy up the rest of the houses off of Lindsay street behind the bookstore and then we can build the new 10,000 seat convocation center.

Now i wonder how they are going to renovate the Y, are they going to fill in the swimming pool and keep the basketbal courts?

Excellent move for A&T.....bad move for people who live in the community near and in close proximity of the present Y that will miss it's easy access. It can be a win-win situation if Hayes-Taylor finds a new location within the "reach" of the kids and adults that need the Y's resources. So, in essence, the next move is on the folks at the Y to make sure it services the people it was orginally intended to service.

I get the impression that there is no plan to use the building, the plan is for the land, "the university will eventually use the property to build a 25,000-square-foot classroom building." I don't think the Y's building and a 25,000 sq-ft building can co-exist in that space.

That's the impression i got also. They are going to tear the Y down and build the 25,000sq/ft classroom building in that space.

oldschool stated "My understanding is they will move to lee street and florida street , next to Barber park. They will remain at the present location for up to two years while the new building is being built." That location is near and in close proximity off the community to be Honorest that location would be more Centralized and have more access to the bus routes from both the south side, the hill and the grove Communities.

The state turned down a request for $100m for new engineering buildings from A&T and NC State. The University stated that they would be returning to state officials with that same request at a later date. I guess it is coming soon.
Think about what you read as fact (2,500 sq ft?). Newspapers make mistakes all the time.
