butch davis gets fired. man, i'm an avid tarheel fan and have been all of my life. i grew up in north carolina (of course gator knows that, he's my homeboy) and i consider myself as always being on top of tarheel sports. but i swear i didn't see this coming. all along davis had reiterated how much support he was getting from the tarheel administration. talk about getting "blindsided"!
well, i understand why unc did this. carolina is a school that covets its reputation as being sweaky clean when it comes to ncaa violations and clearly this episode has given the school a black eye. its very unfortunate because butch davis was about to take carolina football to a very high level that hasn't been seen in chapel hill since mack brown left for texas...

Im like you oleschoolaggie ,didn't see this coming. Just 2 days ago he was at their media day program. Also i just heard on the midday news that the AD has just resigned. Looks like they are cleaning house to protect that image.

I tell you, I have to question the timing of these decisions. I watched the webcast of the news conference on the internet. It was a bit chaotic if you want my opinion. No justification at all. I guess the fear was that Davis and the Heel's would have a good season which would have made it even harder to get rid of Davis.

I don't understand why they waited until now to fire him. It is odd that they waited until after the ACC Media day to fire him. I think that he had to go and should have been gone before now. The AD has stepped down also.

i just think the media scrutiny, alumni criticism, along with the upcoming ncaa hearing turned out to be more than unc's chancellor felt they could bare. i think it probably all came to a head with the discomfort of media day. all the attention was on the ncaa investigation instead of the prospects for the season...

Personally to me, it looks like the Chancellor has NEW info that we don't know about yet. Tighten ur seatbelts cause its coming!!!! Butch Davis just recently turned over his records from his personal cell phones and I think there is something in there that he did not come clean about. But you can bet the house that they have new info that is not public right now. Will it come out??? Who knows??? Probably, but more stuff for sure is known by administration.

I firmly believe that Chancellor Thorp a) has new information that helped drive this decision, b) trying to save his behind and the institutions and c) the Board of Governors & his own trustees is probably on him to clean up this mess.
The question now is what did he know and what did other staff members know in his office or in athletics. What will probably happen is a few other staff members will resign or be reassigned until they can be shifted out.

I'll tell you what...there are a few agencies you don't want sniffing around you place and that's the FBI and IRS. But the NCAA is a very close third!

Those cell phone records got him and Baddour, the AD fired, on back to back days. Recruits with new cars, shaded grades, money under the table. They both lied to the Chancellor much like Jim Tressel did at Ohio State.
UNC just didn't wait for the NCAA to get too far along to save themselves serious long term sanctions about lack of institutional control.
