"AGGIE" - YOU ARE HOPELESS. WHAT DO YOU THINK SHUMATE DID FOR OUR PROGRAM - HE TURNED THAT HORRIBLE PROGRAM AROUND. THAT IS A FACT. YOU KEEP BRAGGING ABOUT YOU KNOW THIS PERSON AND THAT PERSON. IF SO, HOW ABOUT GETTING ONE OF THESE SUPER COACHES TO COME TO A&T AND CONTINUE OUT SHUMATES SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM WITH A SORRY a$$ BUDGET. CAN YOU? I can't make A&T interview them. If they did, then you would get one of them. Shumate did an admirable job...I have said that over and over. He came into a terrible situation and made it stable. I would not call it successful, but definitely an upgrade from what it was. Time to upgrade from what he did. Is that so bad of an expectation?

Brown, hard at work with FAMU baseball Release: Thursday 08/25/2011 (ET) by Florida A&M Sports Information Share |
Wilie Brown Gallery TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Aug. 25) - Florida A&M Baseball coach Willie Brown is hard at work, getting the 2011-2012 Rattler Baseball Team prepared for the season. He was hired by the FAMU Department of Athletics, as the first permanent coach since the departure of coach Robert Lucas in 2010.
Brett Richardson coached the Rattlers, as interim coach for the 2010-2011 season, posting a 17-39 record. The Rattlers made the MEAC baseball tournament, before being knocked out in the first round.
Brown, is a former star Rattler baseball player from 1989-1992, before being drafted as a junior by the Florida Marlins. He spent four years in the minor leagues. He comes to FAMU after 13 years in the high school ranks, coaching both softball and baseball. At Maclay School, Brown coached baseball the last six years, four as head coach.
While at FAMU, Brown was a standout player for Robert Lucas and Joe Durant, as the Rattlers won three consecutive MEAC titles in baseball from 1990-1992. His junior season was the breakout season that got him drafted. Brown led the Rattlers in total at bats with 169, as well as total hits with 48, in 48 games. He also led the Rattlers in home runs with seven his sophomore year in just 27 games and five his junior year.
Brown is looking forward to rebuilding the Rattler baseball team to its championship status. "It's undescribable. This is one of those dreams that at some point you feel is unattainable. To be here, today with the support of the FAMU administration and FAMU athletic department is phenomenal," Brown said.
He is also excited about the opportunities in the MEAC. "I'm well aware of the coaching changes in the MEAC. That allows for a wide-open field. We want to prepare to take our shots at the title right away. Being in high school coaching, I am well aware of the talent in the area. We want to make every effort to keep that talent here, starting with the highly-successful Babe Ruth leaguers, up to the high school level," he added.

Most of the FAMU folks I've spoken with are upset with this pick. They feel like they picked the least qualified of the final candidates.

yeah, and even though he's a famu alum, they're also upset with their newly hired men's head basketball coach, clemon johnson. and justifiably so. he too was amongst the "least qualified" of all the candidates who applied for that job.
either famu's athletic director is an absolute genius, incompetent, or lacks funding. my guess is that its the latter, he lacks funding so he can't hire the best qualified candidates.
in my opinion, other than football and volleyball, famu overall athletics isn't much better than ours. at least not at the moment. and it probably has a lot to do with lack of funding...

To honestly answer your question, he is very competent, but he has absolutely NO CLOUT. Like Hayes and Townsend before him, his hands are completely tied by President James Ammons. Ammons calls EVERY shot. It's a shame, too!

It's a shame, too! maybe that explains why they hired johnson as their head basketball coach. if i remember correctly, dude has never had a winning season as a head coach. albeit, he's played in the nba, but that doesn't automatically qualify you as a good head coach. a&t has proven that...
