N.C. A&T football academic progress improves Tuesday, May 24, 2011 (Updated 2:36 pm) Staff Reports Aggie football improved its four-year academic performance average by a score of nearly 30 points, according to figures released by the NCAA today. That score, called Academic Progress Rate, means that the program can offer more scholarships to its players this year but that it is still being penalized for having a lower than average academic progress. Of a possible 63 scholarships the school can offer its football players, A&T can only offer 54, though that is an improvement of about 10 scholarships over those available to the program last year, based on APR.A&T's score in 2009-2010 is 927, with a four-year average of 872. A perfect score is 1,000. The scores include the latest available academic information. well, there ya have it! this answers my questions of how this year's apr impacts the number of schollies we can offer. does this increased number of schollies take into account the waiver that was approved or is that a separate issue?

I'm very pleased to see the APR improving and 10 more scholarships will help. What is the average APR that we must have or maintain to get out of the penality? Do we get additional scholarships based on improving APR each year? What's the process?

Let me clarify for everyone -That additional ten takes effect immediately. We can now sign 19 players for 2011 which means we can now go after transfers or save the bulk for next fall and sign a full 25. We really need to be at 950 or above to stay completely clear of trouble.

Updated by N&R 5pm:
Of a possible 63 scholarships the school can offer its football players, A&T can offer only 45.83. That's an improvement of about one scholarship over last year, based on APR.
The only entity that can clear this up is A&T (Hilton): crickets: chirps, chirps

We need some clarity on this issue again. Schools in worse shape are able to offer more scholarships. Seems from my understanding our penalty should be no greater than 6 scholarships.

The max. (63) only applies if you are offering the max. Whatever you are offering at the time of the penalty is the baseline for the reduction. That's clear. What's not clear to me, is this a lock until we reach the APR threshold or can we increase scholarships proportionally up to the max. minus the penalty (if we are able to find additional funding).

I figured it out.
For the 10/11 season, we were only allowed 48.0 Counters for Football. A counter - A student receiving any form of Athletic Aid. So A&T Could only have 48 guys with at least a partial scholly.
How we got the 927 during the 09/10 year:
Since we only could have 48 guys with a scholly, for us to get a 1,000 for an APR score, we would have had all 48 guys remain Academically Eligible and not drop out.
So we had 44.5 counters remain eligible out of the 48. I am not sure how that .5 came in but that's probably because one of the 4 gentlemen did leave the school academically ineligible.
So the equation is this:
2(44.5)/2(48) x 1000 = 927
For the 2011/12 season, we will have 54 counters. For us to get a .927 or higher, we can only have 4 players that are receiving athletic aid academically ineligible.
This also means we can give 6 more players athletic aid. But if we do not have 54 counters, the formula is this:
2(# of players eligible)/2(# of counters) x 1000
I hope this helped some.
