We all have read Lovelace's email, A&T's head trainer, concerning sickle cell testing of students trying out for NCAA sports at A&T. We also learned that Athletic Director Wheeler Brown was not copied on that email.
If you had read N&R rendition of the email, you would have learned that some student-athletes were already tested at A&T's health center. Most people don't know that these sickle tests were done due to a policy set forth by Wheeler Brown and not by the NCAA which began Aug 1, 2011.
There was a reason why Wheeler Brown was not sent a copy of the email. What was that reason? It appears there were persons who knew the sickle testing of students was Brown's policy and these persons did not want Brown to stop what they considered was a fiscally responsible act of not allowing tryouts to get tested at the University's health center.
There could have been more reasons than the student's death incident that were cause for AD Brown's firing but in my opinion the main impedance came about due to undermining a man and his position.

Hopefully, the trainers will be dealt with! The trainer, Lovelace, by his position does not get into who will pay for sickle cell tests at the University health center. Also by his position, he doesn't set policy on what tests have to done and what tests to stop doing. I have a strong suspension that Lovelace was told to send out that email and it wasn't Wheeler Brown who told him.

word around the department is that Wheeler knew all along about the email and he never sent any students to sickle cell testing, most are wondering why he is saying all of this stuff? It seems that Wheeler and the Aitken and Hills were on board with cutting cost and met weekly only how to cut costs in the department and as a result, this email came out to the coaches to cut cost, and from what I am told trainers are not in those budget meetings. Plus, I think the trainer was new to the job, so he wouldnt have taken it upon himself to send it out..the real kicker is that someone who still works in the department said that Space told Brown and the other administrators after the first time the football player died from sickle cell, that they should test all students just to be careful and give all students trying out physicals..he was told it would cost too much..sound familiar? So, I am sorry I just dont believe that Wheeler didnt know what was going on...

Ms. Atiken and Mr. Hills must be terminated for their roles in this foolishness and mandatory sickle cell testing must be in place for all student athletes AND students must have a physical w/ sickle cell testing in place before they show up for an athletic team tryout.
A&T Student health, safety & well being must never be trumped by saving money.

this is from people in the athletic department, who worked with Brown, Hills and Aitken, so it is coming from the staff..

I have a question, if the athletic department knew about the new NCAA policy, why wasnt the coaches informed of the new bylaw requiring testing for students? was there a memo sent out, that is missing? why would the trainer send the email stating exactly the opposite, now all I can say is what I have been told from staff and coaches who still work there, they said that the department wasnt told anything about sickle cell testing except not to test students..it just doesnt add up..sorry, but it seems like it is all coming out..

Well, knowing Wheeler as a former classmate and as a cohort and colleague at another MEAC institution, I find it hard to believe that Wheeler KNEW about this email. He has always been one to say, "Error on the side of caution," so I don't think that he would be a party to this...just to save some budget dollars. Wheeler is already gone... those staffers are trying to save their own butts. C'mon, woman!
