I don't know Elon, I don't know... www.gopack.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/swepson_jason00.html www.thetimesnews.com/articles/elon-40030-football-new.htmlElon picks N.C. State assistant as new football coach Comments 1 January 09, 2011 11:34 PM Adam Smith / Times-News ELON — Jason Swepson, a protégé of North Carolina State coach Tom O’Brien, has been hired as Elon University’s new football coach. He will be introduced in an official capacity as the school’s 20th football coach during a news conference at noon Monday on campus at Alumni Gym. It means that Elon’s search to replace the departed Pete Lembo ended exactly three weeks after Lembo resigned to accept the top job at Ball State. The 40-year-old Swepson was scheduled to meet with Elon’s team on Sunday night. He coached running backs under O’Brien at N.C. State and Boston College for the last 11 seasons, a continuous stretch that started in 1999. Swepson never has been a head coach and has spent only one of his 19 years in coaching as a coordinator. In 1996, he served as the offensive coordinator at Holy Cross. That period on Swepson’s résumé includes experience on the Football Championship Subdivision level, college football’s second tier, where Elon resides. He held assistant coaching positions at Rhode Island, Boston University, Holy Cross and Northeastern from 1993-98, an era when the FCS was known as Division I-AA. Swepson worked NFL internships with the Jacksonville Jaguars, San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins from 1998-2000. As a college player, he lettered at running back and receiver for Boston College from 1988-92.

but you have to keep in mind, elon can afford to take risks on a new head coach given their record over the last 5 years or so. plus, unlike a&t, elon likely has a good infrastructure in place which will enable the average coach to be successful.
if this coach falls on his face, elon would still be able to rebound with another head coach. elon is standing on firm ground, we are not...

A lot of guys have Fobbs' resume ala Jenkins of Bethune Cookman but very few of them could be as inept as Fobbs at being a headcoach. I don't think Fobbs is a bad football coach as an assistant, he just wasn't a good head coach.

I think you're right Dooms. It's that ACC background they are enamored with and not his coaching resume. I give him three years and he'll be on the hot seat.
Lembo knew his all-American QB, his all-American wide out and most of his OL were gone and so was his offense for next year. Ball State came calling and he made his case and got out of Dodge.
I think he'll be a total failure at Ball State but that is just my opinion. He's a talent coach and while good on a FCS level he's not ready for prime time, not yet.

Lets be real Guys.... Elon Football & A&T Football are two totally different machines. From the nuts and bolts to the drivers. They have the facilities and resources to bring a coach up to speed. Some of us still think we need a Head Coach with 5 rings and a jersey in the rafters. Elon looses a few games, their alums will say, "well at least we had a good drive up here". Let A&T loose 2 games and our fans are rolling their eyes at the Aggie Dog. Elon Football has been built from the ground up solely off of fund-raising and Alumni Giving. If we had to do that i'd imagine the 2011 recruiting class looking a little something like....

The reason I'm not sold is Elon plays in a different conference than we do as well. This guy's not coming in playing against SSU, Morgan, and Howard, knowhatimsayin? He should beat our @ss pretty handly but the southern conference is not a playground. Plus the expectations of the program are a lot greater than they were when Lembo came aboard. This move could (and should) move them back to the end of the SoCon pack.
I think Lembo will do enough at Ball State to get another job before the poop hits the fan. I think his next job after Ball State could serve to be his fall on his face experience.

the southern conference is very "overrated". folk think because app state has been so successful in recent years, that the socon is one of the best fcs conferences. but it ain't. other than app state and elon, the rest of the conference wasn't really that good based on fcs standards. true, the socon is better than the meac. but its nowhere near as good as the caa...

I agree with A1. Elon's coach came in when his star QB and WR were freshman and now that they are gone he knew that Elon would be facing some losing seasons without his stars so he jumped on the first opportunity he got to get out of there. Albeit, Ball State is a very good opportunity for any coach trying to move up.

Lembo had a strong run at Lehigh also...I think he will be OK at Ball State.

Elon has a $14 million dollar athletic budget so I'm sure the new coach will do just fine.
