Could Maynor be a great head coach at A&T --- probably. Could Hayes be a great A.D. at A&T ---- probably. The only problem I have with the hires is the incredible lack of effort it took to come to this likely conclusion.... Who else was SERIOUSLY CONSIDERED??? Who else was interviewed??? Is everyone that convinced that Maynor, with only one year of head coaching experience, can turn things around? I just don't know many jobs where only one year of executive management gets you a higher-profile job....unless you did something lights out in your previous job. I just don't think Maynor's first year at WSSU qualifies..... 1) WSSU still had FCS/FBS-quality talent as they transitioned to the CIAA. 2) Too much was made about the Winston victories over A&T and NCCU 3) WSSU was not even the CIAA champions- THEY FINISHED THIRD!!! 4) I have no idea of how well Maynor can recruit and build a program. I am not posting these points to denigrate Maynor ---- I'm just posting reasons why a MORE THOROUGH SEARCH FOR OUR NEXT HEAD COACH (AND ATHLETIC DIRECTOR) NEEDS TO BE CONDUCTED. And as far as Billy Hayes is concerned, how many QUALITY YEARS can we get out of him as our A.D.? He's 65 years old. Furthermore, he's hopped from NCCU to FAMU to WSSU....and now to A&T....Are folks telling me this sounds like a person whose feet are on solid ground? I hold no ill will for either gentleman......but there is nothing I see here where either gentleman is such a solid lock that A&T just rolls out the red carpet for them to lead us. I want someone on here to tell me that there has been a thorough search, and that other persons have been interviewed or seriously considered to be our next head coach and A.D., respectively. If so, I'll be more than happy to retract my entire post.... JUST SHOW A BROTHA YOU'RE DOING A THOROUGH SEARCH super!

MAYNOR as HEAD COACH...great choice; Hayes as AD...NOT EVEN a consideration;
Interim AD as permanent AD...NOT a bad choice, and probably an option that would give us some needed STABILITY,AND professionalism-- my vote is FOR HIM!!!!!

LC Cole - just fired from DII Stillman Al Lavan - just fired from Del State Melvin Spears - fired from Grambling George Pugh - was last a head coach 20 years ago at AAMU. He left AAMU to become a high school coach in Selma, Al.
This list of coaches inspires me to buy season tickets next year and donate money......TO NCCU.
As I stated on the meacfanszone board, I personally talked to Chancellor Martin at the UNCC/A&T game ----- and told him to look beyond the "typical hires" to find our next coach.
1) Top assistants at FBS programs (Sun Belt, MAC, C-USA) 2) DII head coaches with conference/playoff success at the DII level 3) Top assistant coaches (not position coaches) at FCS schools that have had conference/playoff success.
These are attributes I'm looking for in a coach. For those who say A&T is in shambles and doesn't have enough to attract candidates with such credentials ----- ALLOW THEM TO TELL US THAT. I just don't believe in boxing ourselves into a corner from the jump, with us end up picking a coach that wouldn't even get a look from a semi-respectable FCS program. The time for us hiring coaches no other schools want has to come to an end.

Exactly westcoastaggie! I'm saying it again, somebody jump the gun firing Coach Lee. If these are the current list of applicants that he have to choose from, it might be cheaper for me to buy the sports package, or look at ESPN3 play-by-play, or read the updates on the message board, than traveling from Florida to see games.

Martin has their resumes and cell phone numbers and is in direct contact with them.

Getting sacked painful for A&T's Lee Sunday, December 5, 2010 (Updated 6:47 am) By Jeff Mills Staff WriterGREENSBORO -- The wound is still open, the injury still fresh. There's no blood, no bruising, nothing visible at all. But you can hear the hurt in his voice. Alonzo Lee isn't the N.C. A&T football coach anymore. And the tough old linebacker -- a Division II All-American in his playing days -- didn't get to say goodbye to his players. "It's like getting your heart cut out," Lee said. The last team meeting was the sleepy Saturday after Thanksgiving, one week after the last loss in the Aggies' 1-10 season. "We sat down and really talked about being totally committed," Lee said. "I told them, 'Next season starts today, and it starts in study hall. ... We can't change what happened on the field this year. Let's win off the field in the classroom.' " A churchgoing man, Lee got the word the next day -- come Monday, he was gone. Gone after 1 year, 10 months, 13 days on the job. Gone with more than two years left on the contract he signed worth $145,000 annually, the deal offered by athletics director Wheeler Brown and also signed by Chancellor Stanley Battle. Brown and Battle were gone, too, before Lee. New Chancellor Harold Martin and interim AD Earl Hilton made the move. "Any time you're talking about someone's livelihood, it's a hard decision," Hilton said. "... Without getting into too much detail, it's an effort to take the athletics department in a different direction, to more closely align athletics with institutional expectations of excellence." Lee said he had already taken the first steps toward that same goal. Lee's first team went 5-6, winning more games than in the previous three seasons combined. The 1-10 season was over before it started. The Aggies lost quarterback Lewis Kindle for the season when he tore up a knee in the last week of preseason practice. The offense never recovered. "It would've been an entirely different season," Lee said. "Not only did we lose a young man, we lost a young man who carried a lot of clout with the other guys. It was like sticking a pin in a balloon." Read more: www.news-record.com/content/2010/12/05/article/getting_sacked_painful_for_ataposs_lee

I can't wait to see what the next guy's gonna have to work with.
When Hayes got fired, I was relatively happy (because I was completely ignorant to all the behind the scenes).
When Small got fired, I wasn't upset at all. By then I had done my homework and I knew the behind the scenes.
When Fobbs got fired, I rejoiced. I knew he had no chance the day he was hired.
Lee's firing upsets me. I didn't particularly care for some of his choices for staff, but I think he was working the kinks out and would have had us on solid footing in another two years, tops. And he was doing that with little to no help from the administration.
Correction: he was doing with while being tripped up and sideswiped by the administration.
Next man, be warned. You see what you're getting yourself into...

Wonder if Jeff Mills plans to cover any of A&T's games this season?? The N&R usually has a stringer do our basketball games, but he's been a regular at every football press conference for the past two years.

A&T has fired four good people. They were once coaches, players and administrator who bleed and still bleed blue and gold. They are Hayes, Small, Wheeler and Lee. All four were part of MEAC football championships, as head coaches, assistant coach and administrator.
I will never agree with Dooms that Small was totally inept. He has a MEAC Championship as a head coach. Small could have gone 4-7 his first year just like the previous year under Hayes instead of being a champion. Small's last year (his 3rd) was very difficult. He was dealing with deaths and dealing with a crazed university administration snapping constantly at his heels with threats of firing and letting his players know it.
Could Small have recovered? We will never know, like we will never know about Lee.
No one is perfect and A&T will never find that perfect person.
Is Pender the power broker in Martin's inner circle, now? I wonder what you all will be saying in two years. I hope it is all good but I seriously doubt it even if things are going well.

Jazzy, I'll never agree that Small was totally inept. I never said he was. I did say that the losses he incurred took their toll and he wasn't able to recover. I was guilty of the same thing. When I lost my mother I was simply unable to go back to work and perform at my former levels. After several months of lying to myself, I walked in and quit.
I also said from the moment I met Small and Lee, Lee struck me as the head coach and Small struck me as the assistant. I feel we made a mistake this time around, whereas when we let Small and Fobbs go, I felt like we were doing them a favor and helping them move to the next phase of their life where they and we would be happier.
