49ers Host Hampton In Preseason WNIT, Friday Courtesy: Charlotte Sports Information Release: 11/16/2010
Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte 49ers women's basketball team has just added a home game to their schedule. The 49ers will play 2010 MEAC Champion Hampton in the Preseason WNIT in Halton Arena, Friday, November 19 at 7 pm.
Charlotte enters the Hampton game, which is in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT, after defeating Iona, 72-40, in the first round of the Preseason WNIT and then the 49ers lost at Florida, 76-70, in the Preseason WNIT quarterfinals.
Epiphany Woodson leads the 49ers in scoring at 14.5 points per game after she scored a career-high 23 points against Florida. Shannon McCallum is second on the team in scoring at 14.0 points per game after she scored a season-high 21 points against Iona. Kendria Holmes is third on the team in scoring at 12.0 points per game after scoring in double-figures in both of Charlotte's games this season. Jennifer Hailey scored nine points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds against Florida. Paige McCallum recorded her first double-figure scoring game at Charlotte with 13 points against Iona.
This game will mark the third meeting between the two teams. Charlotte has won both of the previous meetings. Charlotte defeated Hampton, 69-46, in their last meeting which came at Hampton, November 18, 2008. Shannon McCallum scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench in that game. LADY PIRATES FALL TO CHARLOTTE 64-57 McMillian_Action Email to a Friend | Print 11/19/2010 10:44:31 PMCHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team lost 64-57 to Charlotte in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT on Friday in Halton Arena despite two Lady Pirates scoring in double figures. Senior forward Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) and junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) each led Hampton (1-2) with 16 points, and Perry added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Perry shot 7-for-13 from the floor, while McMillian went 5-for-17 from the floor and 2-for-8 from 3-point range. Hampton jumped out to a 10-point lead, 24-14, at the 6:20 mark of the first half on a jumper from Perry, but Charlotte closed the half on a 16-4 run to take a 30-28 lead into the intermission. The Lady Pirates held a 47-45 lead with 4:52 to play, but Charlotte went on a 17-10 run to close out the game. A layup from Shannon McCallum with 3:49 to play gave Charlotte a 49-47 lead, and the 49ers refused to look back from there. The Lady Pirates shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) from the floor, while also shooting 75 percent (9-for-12) from the free throw line. Hampton made just two of 10 3-point attempts. The 49ers (2-1) shot 41.7 percent (25-for-60) from the floor and out-rebounded the Lady Pirates 42-40. Charlotte forced 20 Hampton turnovers and was able to survive shooting just 48.1 percent (13-for-27) from the free throw line. McCallum scored a game-high 22 points for the 49ers after shooting 9-for-13 from the floor, while adding a team-high 15 rebounds. Kendria Holmes added 11 points. McCallum had 10 points in the first half. The 49ers had 40 points in the paint to Hampton’s 28.
