I havent gotten to all the threads yet, so this may have been asked and answered in one of those. But I just have to wonder about the play calling and usage of one of our fastest players. Should he be running inside the tackles on plays designed for bigger, stronger backs?
Im not a football guru like Aggie One or a few others here, but it seems like he was better used on toss sweeps, options, screens, etc that would take better advantage of his speed.
There is no way he should have rushed for negative yardage on 7 carries. And he caught no passes. What gives?

Do I want to go there? How do I say this without........(takes deep breath).........No we are not using him correctly.
But......when we have tried to use him the way someone with that speed should be used he doesn't live up to the billing either.
Answered that question about as nice as I could.

Is he using himself correctly? The same plays and blocking that Mayhew & Drake get are the same for Raper so what gives???....just because he the fastest on the team doesn't mean he's the most talented. Hell, seems like we've tried to use him as a decoy and people aren't even scared anymore! Just because you can burn a defender you still have to catch the ball but he couldn't do that well enough so they moved him back to his "home" at RB & he fumbles & he's fragile

I have to say NO...they don't know how to get him the ball where he can get to the second level quickly...that would make him dangerous. Him playing runningback shouldn't scare anybody.

I understand what you're saying but he can't catch! They've tried that & it didn't work. Hell look at the returns he had this week. I really wish Ferrell would've took them from Raper cause he falls down too easily! I swear he was tackled by a blade of grass one return

I repeat an earlier comment I made. He is not a running back. He does not have the skills of a true running back. His speed got him over in high school. They need to train him to become a great WR. His talent and/or speed is being wasted at the running back position.

He was also probably allowed continue bad habits for a running back because of his speed his entire life.
His high school coaches probably never taught him to run between the tackles, getting low, horizontal movement, etc, etc....because they probably didn't have to cause he would eventually break one.
It's actually not that uncommon. Happens to plenty of running backs after high school. He also might not have the hands or route running skills to play receiver at the college level, especially if our WR group is good as advertised.
What type of offense did Shelby run?

I honestly believe Raper is scared out there on the field. If he can learn to catch the ball he would be best used at WR. Last year in the game at Coastal Carolina he showed flashes of becoming a good WR but I have not seen that this year. I think he would have a problem catching a pass cross the middle.

Well, I'll tell you one thing...the best way to get hurt is playing scared or soft, whichever term you choose. We had a guy that was a class ahead of me in high school...could flat out fly. Was the state record holder in the 400 meters in '87. Got out on the football field and would tip toe through the hole...the coaches to him to run he wouldn't, he wound getting his knee torn to shreds. His name is Chris Love...has a brother named Reggie Love who played at UNC, he was also a speedster. They tell me Chris has a son at high school in Wake Forest and he's a beast at runningback. Just to mention his pedigree, but back to the topic...Raper needs to be at receiver but he can't be afraid of contact.

We graduated the same year and both our sons are now in the same pop warner football league, so we talk a lot. his son may be playing for me next year. Reggie was an excellent track athlete. The entire family is. Bryce Love is the kid your talking about. He is the top track athlete in the country for his age group. Back to subject though....They need to make a decision whether they want him to play WR or RB. That's whats hurting his training. If they want him to be a running back then teach him RB drills all summer. Vice versa if they want him as a receiver. This tweener stuff is not working for him.
