GREENSBORO — After a two-month search, N.C. A&T football coach Alonzo Lee has found his quarterback.
On the baseball team.
George Hines, a redshirt senior and three-year starter in center field for the Aggies, will be A&T's quarterback for the final four games, Lee said Monday.
"He's more than just an athlete who wants it," Lee said. "He's a guy who wants to be a student of the game. The other guys see that, and that leadership made the difference. He's our guy going down the stretch. ... We'll do a little rotation with the wildcat (offense), but he's going to be our main guy."
Hines' name wasn't even on the roster Monday — two days after his first start — and there was no profile of him on A&T's football website.
Hines wore No. 15 in his debut Saturday, a 31-26 loss at Delaware State. Hines, who threw a touchdown pass that was nullified by a holding penalty, sat out the second half with a mild concussion, but he left the game with the Aggies ahead 14-12.
"I told him, 'Son, you're a baseball player, so I know you know how to slide,' " Lee said. "He's clear to practice this week, and we won't hit him."
Hines led an 18-play, 72-yard scoring drive the first time he had the ball, taking 9:40 off the clock.
Lee said Hines has a strong, accurate throwing arm, but he won the job based on his work studying film and learning the offense.
A leadoff hitter for the baseball team, Hines said hitting is tougher than getting hit.
"If you're talking about a left-handed flame-thrower on the mound, then that's a lot tougher than facing a defense," Hines said. "It's a different mindset. In football, you've got more time to read and react and study. ... You get time to think. And you can be a lot more emotional in football than you can in baseball."
A&T lost starting quarterback Lewis Kindle, a sophomore, in August with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Senior backup Shelton Morgan struggled in five starts, and sophomores Terrence Webb and Ricky Lewis have played limited roles.
"I feel great about our quarterback situation right now," Lee said. "George is definitely an outstanding talent. It's really a blessing that he's come along and picked up the offense in such a quick fashion."

Lee might like Hines as his QB but it make more sence to play Lewis or Webb since they will be returning next year. Hines has 4 more games of eligibility and it's possible we won't beat Howard and I know we won't beat BC, FAMU and SCSU, so why not let Lewis and Webb get the experience. I have never been a coach but it makes sence to me to let your future QB's get the playing time and game experience.

Here's a fun fact:
Webb completed 12-of-22 passes for 149 yards, zero interceptions and two touchdowns against Del State.
Hines completed 3-of-7 passes for 22 yards and zero touchdowns.

unlike my normal self, the only thing i know about the dsu game is the final score. just too disappointed to even follow the game last week. we really must be pitiful to bring in a 5th year senior baseball player who beat out all 3 of our backup qb's even though he hadn't played a down of football since being on campus. man, i wonder if we can pickup a couple of d-linemen right off the street like that...

Webb had two costly fumbles one that was run back for a Del St. TD..Sacked Twice and 66 yds passing on the last drive of the game Hines had a 28yd TD called back for Holding and 7 carries for 30 yds Lewis 44 yd pass to Miles and 1 carry for 2 yds Hines may start but, I think we may see all three QBs for the rest of the season

I said the same thing when I first heard news of Hines getting playing time. What does it say about or QB's? This guys hasn't played since HS and he beats out scholarship QB's that have played at the collegiate level.

Lee seems pretty optimistic about a QB who played just one decent half against the third worst team in the conference.
I mean really, Hines only had a grand total of 22 passing yards and led the team on one scoring drive.
I am afraid Lee is gonna have his heart broken if Hines struggles against Howard.

I agree and is it really fair to the kid? Like you said he has played one quarter of competitive football in how many years? I hope for the best but man you have to be realistic too. I guess Coach Lee is really banking on him being a hidden jewel He recruited kids to be QB but you find a better one that walks on after a 5 year absence from the sport What does it say about the kids you recruited and developing players?

In all fairness to Hines though...the announcers were impressed with his pocket awareness for it to be his first start as a college qb. Not only that, they could tell he was becoming more confident as the game wore on...that's why they were shocked when he didn't come in the second half. Of course, they didn't know he was injured. So, it could be a good thing. The one thing about the offense that Berry runs is the qb has to be an accurate pocket passer and if it's not there he must be able to escape the rush. So this guy did that pretty well...but then again, it was Del State.

22 passing yards and 29 rushing yards and zero touchdowns.
I understand we all need something to get excited about right now, but let's not anoint Hines as Our Lord and Savior just yet.

I cannot agree with you on this one Thrilla... Webb played good stat wise but, got sacked twice and had two costly fumbles that changed the game. Listening to the game Del St had no answer for Hines. I still think that we will see all three quarterbacks in game on Sat. Ricky played a decent game and so did Webb. You keep forgetting about the TD that was called back and it was the second longest pass of the game.

Durham Hillside math: 22 > 149 67 of those yards came on the last drive of the game against a prevent defense

Houston Westbury math:
2 more years of eligibility > 4 more games of eligibility.
I believe the children are the future. Teach them how to read defenses and let them lead the way ... Show them all the beauty they possess inside.

Now you betta be gettin now Thrilla....you betta be gettin. Webb drove them down inside the ten twice and once had a fumbled snap in which they wound up missing the field goal. The second one they turned it over on downs. So, I don't know...no one on the squad is exactly Peyton Manning or anything...HELL! I'd like to see a qb drop back, set up and deliver a decent ball on time to a receiver a time or two. If Hines can do that, then I'm cool.
As for you Thrilla...that would be "THE Hillside High School" to you feller!
