GREENSBORO — N.C. A&T has the students, faculty and federal grants to rev up its engineering program. Now, all it needs is the space, and leaders in the state Senate want to help the university solve that problem. Senate leaders Tuesday proposed a higher education bond package that would include $104 million to build a school of engineering at A&T. “It will be an expansion of our program, and as far as I know, it will be a new facility,” state Sen. Katie Dorsett, a Guilford County Democrat, said Tuesday. Andrew Perkins, A&T’s assistant vice chancellor for facilities and engineering, said a new building is needed to help attract the best and brightest to the engineering program. “We felt that looking toward the future ... we wanted to have a very robust engineering facility to support the anticipated and continued growth of our school of engineering,” Perkins said. “We have an excellent engineering program now. We just want to make it better and greater.” www.news-record.com/content/2010/05/26/article/at_expansion_may_get_boost_from_state

It's great to get funds, but why does it always have to be as a stepchild to NC State doing the exact same thing or similar? and usually with a higher price tag.
A&T isn’t the only college that would benefit from the bond package. Other aspects include: $130 million to finance capital facility costs of repairing and renovating state buildings in a manner to be determined by the General Assembly; $55 million to acquire equipment for the UNC and community college systems; and $161.5 million to finance an engineering building at N.C. State.

NC State is probably the main reason for this bond package. They knew we would raise hell, so they decided they had better include us. It's all good though, because that says a lot about our College of Engineering. We have to take the nuggets they give us and keep pressing for more. And like captaggie stated, State hears footsteps and the gap is really closing. Furthermore, I think our Chancellor had a lot to do with that.

I agree. I wonder if other schools are included, too, to make it more palpable to the senate and voters.

The state is trying to beef up NC State with the likes of UNC and Duke. We are considered the top HBCU in the state, so they try to keep us happy

• EDUCATION BONDS APPROVED. The Senate has given its blessing to borrowing $450 million in bonds, with most of the money going to construct engineering buildings at NCSU and N.C. A&T. Some of the money would be used for community college and university equipment purchases while other funds will be set aside for repair and renovation to buildings. The measure now heads to the House.

From what I have been hearing, A&T will be purchasing the Hayes Taylor YMCA and the property next to it, I think its some type of lodge. This is where the proposed site for the new building will be. I don't know if they will be renovating Hayes Taylor or demolishing it.

Long, long overdue. What are they going to do with the Y? Is that old postal facility being used by anyone or is it even still there?

If you're talking about the old postal building across the street from the House of Prayer...It's gone!

The House of Prayer bought the old Post Office a few years ago and finished tearing it down in 09. Also, from my understanding, it's been in the plans for quite some time for A&T to purchase the Y.

There is a lot of activity currently going on at the site of the old PO. Lately there have been a lot of earth movers out there. I assume they are about ready to began construction on whatever it is they are building there. A&T is interested in purchasing the property where the church is located at the corner of Benbow and Market. I heard the asking price is out the "wazoo". The church is trying to get rich off of A&T. Can you say "Eminent-Domain"!!!!

Naw, but I can say "your arms too short to box with God."
I remember walking into that Y with my boys 20 years ago thinking it was part of campus and getting cussed out by the staff up front. "Y'all ayantee boys always come up in here thinking this is y'alls. It ain't, now git!"
I hope they find a new spot nearby for it. It's an integral part of the community.
If we're going to expand, once we get the Y and the Order of the Water Buffalo building, we need to be looking at all that land across from the band building all the way over to the baseball stadium (and the daggone stadium too). No pernt in crossing E. Market in my opinion.
What would we put on the church's property? Another dorm or a parking garage?

FYI: I dont know about a water buffalo building but the property located behind the YMCA is a Masonic Lodge.
The church bought the Post Office property quick, knowing A&T would want the site in the future. Now they are kicking back, moving around some dirt and waiting on the Martin Money Machine to pull in.
