N.C. A&T's women hope road success continues Thursday, March 25, 2010 (Updated 7:57 am) By Gerald Witt Staff Writer
WOMEN'S NIT
Who: N.C. A&T (23-10) at Miami (19-13)
What: Third-round Women's NIT game
When: 7 p.m. today
Where: BankUnited Center, Coral Gables, Fla.GREENSBORO — They travel well. In two road games in postseason play, the A&T's women's basketball team beat Wake Forest and Charlotte. At 7 p.m. today, the Aggies will face Miami in the third round of the Women's NIT. Local fans could easily travel to the previous games, but will they show up in Miami? "The Aggies fan base is all over the country," said coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs, "and if they know that you're playing, then they'll show up." They may need more than just fans, though. Expect a battle between A&T guard Ta'Wuana "Tweet" Cook and Miami's Riquna Williams. Cook (16.8 points) and Williams (19.3) lead their teams in scoring. "I'm pretty sure they're worried about me, too," Cook said Wednesday. A&T will need to counter 5-foot-11 Miami forward Shenise Johnson, who scored 19 points and nabbed 10 rebounds in the Hurricanes' 77-64 win over Florida in the second round. That challenge to Johnson may come from the post play of A&T forward Lamona Smalley, who is averaging nine points and eight rebounds as an undersized 6-foot center. "We know that we have to go in and play almost a perfect game and we have to stay focused," Cage-Bibbs said. It's a little late...but I guess it is better than nothing. This is the best "advance" story that they could muster up, huh??

How they could fail to mention Amber Calvin in this article is beyond me.

They are counting on an easy "W" for Miami.

the winston salem journal "thoroughly" covers wssu and the durham herald "thoroughly" covers nccu. it is an outrage how poorly the n&r covers positive news of a&t! this little blurb is ridiculous! if unc-g beats wake forest, its all over the sports page. but if a&t beats wake forest, its hardly even mentioned! i've been out of greensboro for many years but as a student, i never gave thought to biased reporting (or lack thereof) by the n&r. i'm the type of person who doesn't get influenced by general rhetoric. i try to be objective, so i've always given the n&r the benefit of the doubt. but the lack of coverage of the lady aggies is downright offensive! if wssu or nccu's ladies had accomplished what we did this year, the winston salem journal and durham herald would've been all over the story! yet, the best the n&r can do is give us about 15 lines of coverage. i'm tellin' ya, this is a friggin' outrage! after we beat wake, we got way better coverage in the winston salem journal than the n&r! that's crazy considering that the winston salem journal's home team, wake forest, loss the friggin' game! in fact, wake got embarrassed and the journal still covered the game far more extensively than the n&r! i am now convinced that the n&r is indeed guilty of biased reporting! man, we need to "bombard" the n&r with emails complaining about their lack of coverage of the lady aggies. here we are making history and the best they can do is give us 15 lines...

Not an excuse, but the N&R had a bunch of staff cuts and forced retirements over the last few years (including Rob Daniels) and they have greatly reduced their sports department. They don't even have a full sports section in the paper now but three times a week.
I think what hurt us after the Wake Forest win was that they had most of their staff covering the ACC men's teams in the opening round of the NCAA tournament ... and then they had a couple of guys covering Guilford College's D3 Final Four run.
I think this may have been a simple case of limited manpower.

Women's bball is just not a big deal (for media outlets) unless you're doing what UCONN is.

... And the women's NIT is probably even lower on their totem pole.
We got pretty good press last year when we won the MEAC tourney and played Florida State. But of course, that was the NCAA, not the WNIT.

BTW: The N&R did a good job the week the women's ACC tournament was here. They had about 2 or 3 stories in the paper and on their website every night.
But of course, that was the women's ACC tournament.

The Miami Herald has a better article(about A&T) IMO Don't tell Miami Hurricanes WNIT doesn't matter Despite failing to make the NCAA Tournament, Hurricanes forward Diane Barnes said `it's a great feeling' to be playing well in the Women's National Invitation Tournament. which resumes Thursday. By ADAM H. BEASLEY abeasley@MiamiHerald.com Basketball history is largely made in the NCAA Tournament, but the Women's NIT isn't exactly bereft of significance. Take, for example, Thursday night's affair in Coral Gables. Miami hosts North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m. with a spot in the Women's National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals at stake. Although the game will not be televised and BankUnited Center probably will be at less than one-quarter capacity, much is at stake for the two up-and-coming programs. For UM (19-13), it would be the first time the women's team has won three postseason games. As for the Aggies (23-10)? It will be the furthest a Division I historically black school has ever gone in the tournament's 13-year existence. `THEY'RE NOT AFRAID' And it doesn't get any easier. N.C. A&T might be from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, but the Aggies are far from pushovers. Ask Wake Forest and Charlotte. N.C. A&T pummeled the Demon Deacons 73-49 in the tournament's opening round, and then downed the 49ers 79-70 on Sunday. Both were road games, albeit in name only. ``They're not afraid to play on the road,'' said UM coach Katie Meier. ``They had 800 fans at Charlotte. At Wake, the fire marshal had to be called.'' Granted, both those road trips were a short drive from N.C. A&T's Greensboro campus. South Florida is some 700 miles away. Still, Meier expects a mosaic of Aggie blue and gold in the stands Thursday. `EMOTIONAL' But even if N.C. A&T played in an empty gym, Patricia Cage-Bibbs' outfit would be a handful. The Aggies run a frantic, up-tempo style and have three players who average in double figures, led by Ta'Wuana Cook's 16.8 points per game. ``They are an emotional, athletic, streaky team,'' Meier said. ``They challenge everything; they definitely have our attention.''
