N.C. A&T to test response to 'gunman' on campus Wednesday, March 24, 2010 (Updated 7:56 am) By Jonnelle Davis Staff WriterGREENSBORO — If you drive by the N.C. A&T campus Friday and see a “gunman” and “wounded” people, don’t call the police. The police already will be on campus, participating in a shooter drill being held by the university to test its response to an emergency, such as the shootings that occurred on the Virginia Tech campus three years ago. “This is an evaluation of how prepared the university is to handle such a crisis, if it were to happen,” said A&T police Chief Glenn Newell. “When you look at a lot of emergencies that have happened across the country, one of the biggest issues has been how prepared has the institution been,” he said. The UNC system is sponsoring the exercise as part of its efforts to enhance safety across the 16-campus system. “We’ve got them scheduled through the end of June,” said Brent Herron, associate vice president of campus safety and emergency operations for the UNC system. Herron said holding shooter drills was one of the recommendations of the Campus Safety Task Force. System President Erskine Bowles formed the task force in the wake of the April 2007 Virginia Tech shootings, in which a student killed 32 people. The state has contracted with EnviroSafe, a Graham consulting company that specializes in emergency response and preparedness, to facilitate the drills at its campuses.
