GREENSBORO — Melody C. Pierce has been named vice chancellor of student affairs at N.C. A&T.

Pierce was named vice chancellor for student affairs at Winston-Salem State in 2001. She has worked in various administrative roles at other universities, and with the New York State Education Department.

Pierce will assume her duties at N.C. A&T by July 1. She replaces Sullivan A. Welborne Jr., who retired.

Pierce was named vice chancellor for student affairs at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) in 2001 by Martin. From 2006-2008, she was vice chancellor for student affairs and enrollment services providing leadership, coordination and budgetary supervision for 15 units. Prior to 2001, Pierce served in a variety of administrative roles including vice chancellor for student affairs at Southern University, vice president for student affairs at Albany State University, assistant vice president/director of residence life and the student union center at Chicago State University, and director of student life at the University of the Virgin Islands. In addition, she served with the New York State Education Department, the State University of New York, Michigan State University, Stephens College, Lincoln University, and Southern Illinois University.

Interesting five finalists:

Three of the five candidates are currently employed in high-ranking positions at institutions in the triad area. Dr. Carol S. Disque is the current vice chancellor of student affairs at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and has been in this position since 1996.

Dr. Melody C. Pierce is the current vice chancellor of student affairs at Winston-Salem State University, and served under Dr. Harold L. Martin, Sr. when he was chancellor of WSSU. Martin, a North Carolina A&T alum, is now the current chancellor of A&T.

Mrs. Linda Wilson is currently the executive director of the Sebastian Health Center here on campus. Wilson has served in this role for over 20 years, and has been pivotal in changes in the health services on campus. She is the only candidate that has progressed to the top five without a Ph.D.

The other two candidates are from out of state.

Dr. Leroy Durant is currently the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. Durant currently serves as the vice president for student development and services.

The final candidate is Dr. Juliana Mosley from Philander Smith College in Little Rock, AR. Dr. Mosley is also the current vice president for student affairs.
