Erskine Bowles is retiring after just four years. The article claims that during his tenure, the chancellors of A&T and Fayetteville State were replaced due to "financial mismanagement". www.wral.com/news/education/story/7014608/Bowles to retire as UNC president Posted: 32 minutes ago Updated: 7 minutes ago Raleigh, N.C. — University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles announced Friday morning that he will retire as head of the 16-campus system by the end of this year, or as soon as a successor can be named. "I know in my head that this is the right decision at the right time," Bowles told the UNC Board of Governors during its monthly meeting. ................... Bowles' tenure was also marked by scandal at several campuses. He replaced the chancellors at both Fayetteville State University and North Carolina A&T State University because of financial mismanagement, and last year, he called for the resignation of North Carolina State University Chancellor James Oblinger amid a federal investigation into the hiring and promotion of Mary Easley, the wife of former Gov. Mike Easley.

I just hope Dr. Martin doesn't go after it and decides stays with us since it probably would have been his by default if he had stayed with the UNC system.

I hope he goes for it and more importantly gets it. We couldn't have a better ally at the top on the UNC System, not to mention the historic perspective. Plus who better to have final say on his replacement. With that being said, he probably will not seek the position, because he just started a job that he has strong emotional ties and hasn’t completed what he started, so the sense of the accomplishment isn’t there yet.

Plus Martin is keen on perception. Im sure he had to know the man was leaving or at least and incling of an idea. Unless Erskine completely screwed him over and encouraged him to come to A&T so he would feel less compelled to jump in the big seat. Martin would be good, but i shudder at the idea of another search committee or even looking for another Chancellor for that matter.

I think Dr. Martin may have had some idea that Erskine would be making this transition. They didn't really do a search for his replace, just promoted Alan Mabe. Umm, I also believe Dr. Martin knew from his vantage point that there was some "unfinished business" that needed to be dealt with at A&T and he couldn't pass that up.
I too also would not want to see another search committee for a Chancellor (until I'm in the process). Just in the last 6 weeks they have made real process on identifying a Provost, VCSA, working hiring a permanent legal counsel. So... I don't think he'll leave just yet.
