ncataggies.com/Womensbasketball/2009-10%20ARTICLES/22AGGIESvdsu.htmCOOK, SMALLEY LEAD AGGIES TO WINGREENSBORO – In 2006, North Carolina A&T women’s basketball coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs introduced Aggieland to names such as AB (Amber Bland), BTJ (Brittanie Taylor-James), Tweet (Ta’Wuana Cook), Nookie (Shantar Waddell) and Mona (Lamona Smalley). Two of those players – Bland and Taylor-James – have already left an indelible mark on the program. But the three other matriarchs of the Aggies resurgence -- Cook, Smalley and Waddell have a chance to reach milestones not even Bland and 2009 MEAC Player of the Year Taylor-James achieved. On Saturday afternoon, Smalley and Cook, continued to make individual strides toward greatness. Smalley had another dominant day on the boards, and Cook continued her assault on the North Carolina A&T women’s basketball record books as the Aggies came away with a 70-56 win over Delaware State Saturday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center. Smalley recorded a double-double for the second consecutive game with 17 points and 12 rebounds. It was the 14th double-double of her career. Smalley has a chance to become just the second player in school history along with Malveata Johnson to score 1,000 points and grab 800 rebounds. She could also become the first player in school history to secure 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 250 assists and 100 blocks. Cook finished with 12 points and five assists on Saturday. Cook’s output gave her more than 1,500 points for her career, making her just the third Aggie along with Johnson and Bland to score more than 1,500 points in a career. Smalley and Cook are on pace to win their third straight MEAC regular-season title. They are also trying to reach their second straight NCAA tournament. “I love that these young ladies have been able to come here and have their dreams fulfilled,’’ said head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs. “They still have so much left to accomplish. They really want to do things that no one has ever done here. They deserve it. They’ve put a lot into this program.” Cook, who is the Aggies all-time assists leader, added to that total with a dish to Nakia DeBlanc for a layup that gave the Aggies a 19-8 lead at the 10-minute mark of the first half. The Aggies (15-7, 9-0) really didn’t have any trouble with the Hornets (3-19, 1-8) from there. Their lead never went under double figures after that point. N.C. A&T led by as many as 21 in the second half. Selena Galloway led the Hornets with 17 points. The Aggies next contest will be Monday afternoon at 4:30 when they take on Maryland-Eastern Shore. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. “The individual accomplishments are all shocking and overwhelming,’’ said Cook. “We really want to win the conference and go undefeated this year. We believe this team can do it because we have a different team this year. There is not one or two people you can focus on. On any given night, a different player on this team can hurt you. It’s just my job to be a leader.”
