SIDNORFOLK, Va. — Lamona Smalley had 16 points to lead five North Carolina A&T women’s basketball players in double figures as the Lady Aggies defeated NSU 81-51 on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall. Smalley was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. A&T improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC, while the Spartans fell to 1-5, 0-1. The Lady Aggies led the entire way and mounted a 40-point advantage (71-31) with 8:20 left in the second half after a layup Nikia Gorham. The Spartans went on a 20-10 run to end the game, but it was not enough to overcome the large deficit. The Lady Aggies took a 43-17 lead into half time and used the inside play of their post players to outdo the Spartans in the second half. For the game, A&T shot 50.7 percent (34-of-67) from the floor and 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from beyond the arc. They connected on nine of their 17 (52.9 percent) free-throw attempts. Additionally, they outrebounded NSU 56-34, scored 48 points in the paint and got 31 points from their bench players. NSU made 19 of its 68 shots from the field (27.9 percent) and shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free-throw line. The Spartans committed 13 turnovers compared to A&T’s 15. Gorham finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Aggies. Ta’Wuana Cook ad 13 points, while Jaleesa Sams had 11 points and six boards. Jaquayla Berry had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds and Crystal Murdaugh added 10 rebounds. Smalley rounded out her stat line with eight rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal in 22 minutes. For NSU, Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) led the way with 14 points. Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) had 13 points and four rebounds. The Spartans are off for the next 10 days. They travel to Savannah State on Dec. 15 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
