wheeler brown played for the aggies football team from 1974-78, and graduated from a&t in 1979 with a degree in health and physical education. brown, a native of baltimore, md., was a part of a&t's first meac football championship in 1975.
as the former head men's basketball coach and associate athletic director at bowie state university, wheeler brown was named associate athletic director at a&t in 2002, serving under former a&t athletic director dee todd. shortly after brown came home to his alma mater, he found our athletic department in absolute turmoil!
our chancellor had just fired our "winningest" head football coach in school history and hired what turned out to be our "losingest" head football coach in school history. needless to say, shortly thereafter, our football team experienced its worst 3 year era in school history. our men's and women's basketball teams were by far the meac's worst. the men barely winning 5 games a season and the women weren't doing much better, probably averaging about 7 wins per season. our men's and women's track teams ranked near the bottom of the meac. baseball was the only team we had that was a contender in the meac.
in august 2008, after serving as interim athletic director since todd had been reassigned, brown was promoted as permanent athletic director at a&t. and today, primarily as a direct result of brown's leadership, both the men's and women's basketball teams are consistent top tier teams in the meac. the women are defending regular season and tournament champions. and the men have finished in the top 5 of the meac more than any other team over the last 5 years. both our men's and women's track teams are amongst the top 3 or 4 teams in the meac and quickly rising. our track program has hosted some of the most prestigious track meets in america! brown is also directly responsible for hiring alonzo lee as our head football coach. in one year, lee has completely reversed the direction of our football team and is currently playing at or above .500 ball with a depth chart that's primarily "freshmen and sophomores". the best is yet to come for aggie football!
of all the sports we sponsor, only volleyball is currently struggling. yet, the most impressive accomplishment of brown, in my opinion, is that he has "rebuilt" our entire athletic department with one of the smallest budgets in the meac!
so ladies and gents, please allow me to introduce to you the "oleschool acclaimed" meac administrator of the year, mr. wheeler brown, athletic director, north carolina a&t state university! he has brought aggiepride back to aggieland...
