HERRING NAMED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-AMERICA
Two other Aggies named All-HBCU
GREENSBORO, June 10, 2009 -- One of the North Carolina A&T football team’s most consistent defensive players in 2008 was recognized by Consensus Draft Services as a preseason honorable mention All-American.
Jarrell Herring, a 6-foot-2, 253-pound senior defensive end out of Detroit, played in and started all 12 games for the Aggies in 2008. A year ago, he transferred to N.C. A&T from Grand Rapids Community College. In his first season as an Aggie, he led all Aggie defensive linemen in tackles with 57.
He also led the Aggies in tackles for loss with 14.5. His three sacks were tied for second on the team, and he recorded three quarterback hurries. In the conference, he ranked 33rd in tackles and sixth in tackles for loss.
Two other Aggies were honored by CDS. Junior offensive lineman Enoch Cohen was named second-team All-HBCU. Cohen (6-4, 285 pounds) is from Winston-Salem, N.C., where he attended North Forsyth High School. Going into fall camp, Cohen is listed as the Aggies starting left-tackle. He has started at different positions along the Aggies offensive line throughout his career.
Andre Thornton was named honorable mention All-HBCU. The senior linebacker from Charlotte, N.C., has been one of the Aggies top tacklers since his arrival. Over the first two years of his career, he led the Aggies in tackles. Last season, he was second on the team with 76. During his career, he has made 221 tackles. Thornton has made 17.5 of those tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
Herring, Cohen, Thornton and the rest of the Aggies begin the 2009 season on Sept. 5 when they travel to Winston-Salem to face arch-rival Winston-Salem State. The Aggies first home game is Sept. 12 against Norfolk State at 6 p.m.
