coach205,
What does it take to develop a line that just blows people off the line like Montana and Richmond did to each other in the FCS championship? We've not had a line with that kind of push in years. Even the Hicks lines created holes but they didn't get a great push such that the back had a 3-4 yd gain before he even touched another player.

Maxell I say time. In a perfect world for me. An offensive lineman should not have to play until his 3rd year in the system. This gives him time to learn the system and get bigger faster stronger. In my mind it should go like this.
Year 1 = Redshirt Scout Team Year 2 = Redshirt Freshman Scout Team (2 years of scout team should have him so driven ) Year 3 - Redshirt Sophmore Back-up maybe start 1 or 2 games when circumstances call for it Year 4 = Redshirt Junior Starter Year 5 = Redshirt Senior Starter
That's a perfect cycle for me on how to develop a great Offensive Lineman on this level at an HBCU. 1AA White School or 1A school would be a little different but not that much. On that level should be starter at Redshirt Sophmore year and start 3 years like I did instead of 2. Once again this is only my opinion and my philosophy on OL play.

Same philosophy your predecessor had. He also said he'd rather recruit a smaller guy and build him up than have to get a fat guy and try to drop his weight, but he had what he had.

Lord, that would be fantastic if we could ever implement a plan like that.
It would probably help if we had the same head coach and OL for 5 consecutive years.

Well, unfortunately that certainly got blown out of the water this year. And time isn't on your side when winning enough isn't buying you the time you need. One way to get this approach done at this level may be get about 4-5 D-IA transfers on the OL for the 1st three years. Fobbs stated he preferred not to use a lot of transfers but in this case that may have been the best approach and go after them aggressively while recruiting with year 4 in mind.

Then you have got to gets kids that can stay eligible....Carter, Bess, Williams, and Wiley ( had he lived) would have been or were 5th year seniors in the OL
