WhiteShaw football coach Darrell Asberry is a finalist for the Johnson C. Smith job, The Post has learned. Asberry, who has led Shaw to back-to-back CIAA championships and a berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2007, interviewed on the JCSU campus Wednesday, according to sources close to the search process. The other finalists are Steven Aycock, JCSU's offensive line coach and Ramon Flanagan, a former offensive coordinator at Division I North Texas State. Aycock, who was assistant head coach under fired head coach Daryl McNeill also interviewed with the search committee Wednesday, while Flanagan and at least one, other unidentified candidate interviewed by phone. JCSU fired McNeill on Nov. 6 after a second straight 3-7 campaign in which the Golden Bulls were 2-5 in the CIAA and struggled with one of the worst defenses in the league. McNeill, the only Bulls coach to fashion more than one winning season since Eddie McGirt retired in 1977, was 23-38 in six seasons at JCSU, including a pair of seven-win seasons in 1996 and 2006. The 2006 team also advanced to the Pioneer Bowl.

I'd much rather see him coming here.

There was obviously a parting of the ways between Asberry and Shaw when the BOT decided to cut the football budget by 30 percent.
Depsite the public perception, Willie Gary's pockets are by no means bottomless and the recession is hitting everyone, especially the big time investor types in real estate law these days really hard.
No credit - no check.
