Earl Monroe HEAD COACH
On Thursday, May 18, 2006 West Virginia State officials named longtime assistant Earl Monroe as the school's head football coach. A search committee presented a list of three finalists to Dr. Hazo W. Carter, Jr., the university's president, who made the final decision. Carter selected Monroe, the Yellow Jackets' interim coach. School officials were impressed with Monroe's aggressiveness in running the program as interim head coach, as the former defensive coordinator brought increased accountability for players on the academic and football sides.
Monroe, 51, has been with the Yellow Jackets since 1987, when he came to the Jackets' program as a volunteer assistant. The Atlanta native and former Miami (Fla.) and West Virginia Rockets linebacker has been the State defensive coordinator since 1996. "State" Athletic Director Bob Parker promoted Monroe to interim coach shortly after former head coach Carl Lee resigned on February 3. Monroe conducted spring practice and signed more than 45 recruits for the upcoming season as a one-man, full-time staff.
Dr. Gregory Epps, Special Assistant to the WVSU president and the chairman of the search committee, said more than 125 individuals applied for the position vacated by Lee. Monroe also has taught physical education classes at State, in individual and dual sports, strength and conditioning and golf.
The former hurricane has turned around the Yellow Jackets going 12-9 in his first two season, including 7-3 in 2007. The school's first winning season since 1992.

i think he's a real sleeper! he apparently doesn't have head coaching experience at the fcs level and i'm not too sure that the conference that wvs plays in presents the kinds of challenges he'll face in the meac. but other than that, he seems to be an ideal candidate.
he'll more than likely come cheap, he's hands on, he's a hard worker (and that means a lot!), he seems to be a very good recruiter, and he gets results. dude just wins! he'll feel like he's in heaven if he were to get the job. hayes was a hard worker also, i believe monroe has that same trait. i read in the article where monroe single-handedly went out and signed about 45 recruts when he first became head coach. that tells me he's about getting the job done and he won't allow a lack of resources to be an excuse for not succeeding. he'll do what he has to do to be successful.
i'm impressed by this cat! he turned a "perennial" losing program into a championship caliber team in less than a year. talk about immediate results!
i also like frazier down at prairie view because he's had a history of turning around programs...

If you're as good as a college coach as he seems to be in flipping a doormat like WVA State into the national limelight at the D-II level with the limited resources he has there to work with then he most likely could do the same here. Stepping into this job would be a veritable gold mine for him.
The only argument against him would be he would have to establish his in-state recruiting base pretty much from scratch but no doubt he is a winner and a program builder.
