These are tough times for Aggie fans. The Aggie football program was once a proud program that walked among the elite in black college football. In a city where loyalties are divided between two schools,North Carolina A&T is struggling to return to its once glorious past. When Aggie fans experienced success, you can hear the chant AGGIE PRIDE everywhere. The city of Greensboro was covered in navy blue and gold. Furthermore, the North Carolina A&T web site started something called "Solid Gold",a call to those who swears allegiance to the pride and pleasure of representing "Aggieland." The sounds of A&T's band, the Blue Machine, fires up the rowd whether at football or basketball games.
But times have changed in Aggieland. Back-to-back 0-11 seasons and the nation's longest losing streak all but signified how far the football program has fallen. It all began the season the Aggies last won the MEAC championship. After losing to Wofford in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, the program has never been the same. What made matters worse is losing the Aggie-Eagle Classic to their hated rivals from Durham-the Eagles of
North Carolina Central. And just as bad,the Aggies lost to Winston-Salem State in the "battle of I-40." But if that weren't enough, the Aggies also fell victoms to their arch-rivals from South Carolina State.
There's an old cliche' that once said "if it ain't one thing, its another." In the case of North Carolina A&T,its become prevalent. If a coach is fired, players will transfer to another school. Fans often vent out frustration by way of the internet. Countless numbers of posters use the fan page as a way to vent out frustration. But that's the nature of fans-its a way to express themselves and how they feel about their favorite team.
North Carolina A&T doesn't want their program to be compared to Duke University-a school which in the minds of Duke students is often stereotyped by so-called pundits who believes Duke is a school known for basketball and academics. Aggie fans long for the glory days when Aggie Pride meant being at every game with the belief they were going to win. When Saturday afternoons at Aggie Stadium meant getting fired up with Aggie fans near and far would turn out in droves to cheer on the Aggies. When you chanted "AGGIE PRIDE',you said it with pride.
As the 2008 football season winds down, the members of Aggie Nation are hopeful the next head coach will reverse the fortunes of the football team. Change the perception of what it means to be an Aggie fan. And finally return to being the once proud program that enjoyed success. And change the atmosphere at North Carolina A&T from a state of depression to a state of euphoria.
