FOBBS HIRES FOUR NEW ASSISTANTSi][Fobbs hires his first offensive coordinator[/i] GREENSBORO, July 16, 2008 – North Carolina A&T head football coach Lee Fobbs announced the hiring of four new assistant coaches as the 2008 season begins. Among the new assistants on staff are two new coordinators. John McKenzie highlights the coaching newcomers because as Fobbs enters his third season as N.C. A&T’s head coach, McKenzie is the fi rst offensive coordinator he has hired to his staff. Fobbs served as the Aggies offensive coordinator during his first two seasons. Tayrone Odums, a former defensive coordinator at Clark Atlanta, will take over as the Aggies defensive coordinator position. Myron Jackson, a former standout at tight end at Florida State, will coach the defensive line. Rounding out the staff will be Chris Robinson, a recent Bethune-Cookman graduate who will coach outside linebackers. John McKenzie “These gentlemen are here because I feel like their attitudes about coaching lines up with my overall vision for this program,’’ said Fobbs. “All these men have deep convictions about discipline, accountability, teamwork and hard work. They will all be a big plus for Aggies football.” McKenzie spent seven seasons as Alcorn State’s offensive coordinator before arriving at N.C. A&T. In 2005, the Braves led the Southwestern Athletic Conference in rushing and in 2003 they totaled 4,885 yards of offense. McKenzie also served as Alabama State’s offensive coordinator from 1989-91. more www.ncataggies.com/Football/2008%20articles/1NEWASSISTNATS.htm

This would be the first time I've smiled about anything that has to do with this program in two years.

In Year three we should be talking about finishing in the upper echelon of the conference instead of continued talk about winning our first game. Better late than never.

Jazz, every school is announcing their hirings right now. Go look over on Onnidan and you'll see a lot of em, so it's not just us. BCU, Tx Southern, Livingstone, Lane, Stillman, Coppin St, and Prarie View all just announced their hirings. Also add Notre Dame, SMU, Ohio State and Kansas to the list. Apparently we appear to be following a standard industry practice.

Back, back, back, back, see ya!!! First let's just discount all the HBCUs summer hirings because we definitely don't want to be compared to Lane, Stillman, Livingstone, etc. Now to stuff that matters; Notre Dame's Athletic Director announced his leaving on May 30th, 2008 to become AD at Duke. 48 days later -not the horror movie - July 16th, yeterday in fact, Notre Dame named their new athletic director. A&T is working on 180 days and still hasn't named a AD, yet. I could go into the other hirings but why, we get the picture. I will say this is an interesting hire since the new Notre Dame AD has no experience in college sports administration. Now this kind of hiring might be considered more like A&T.

Updated release GREENSBORO, July 16, 2008 – North Carolina A&T head football coach Lee Fobbs announced the hiring of four new assistant coaches as the 2008 season begins. “These gentlemen are here because I feel like their attitudes about coaching lines up with my overall vision for this program,’’ said Fobbs. Alabama State’s offense averaged 430 yards and 41.2 points per game on its way to helping the Hornets win their first-ever SWAC championship by going 11-0-1 in ‘91. The Hornets earned a Heritage Bowl bid that same season and totaled 687 yards of offense in a win over N.C. A&T. As a player, McKenzie was a four-year starter at quarterback for Jackson State. He helped the Tigers win three SWAC Championships, was a two-time All-SWAC selection and is a member of the JSU Hall of Fame. “John is going to play a big role in developing our quarterbacks,’’ said Fobbs. “The fact that he has coached quarterbacks and was one himself will play a big role in the maturity of our quarterbacks. He’s also going to be a great fit because our philosophies fit so closely together.” Fobbs said the same of his new defensive coordinator. Odums takes over as the Aggies head defensive mind after spending the last two seasons as Bethune-Cookman’s defensive line coach. He served for two years as Clark Atlanta’s defensive coordinator before becoming the interim head coach in 2004. Odums also spent two seasons at Georgia Southern and was the outside linebackers coach on the Eagles 2000 Division I FCS (formerly I-AA) championship team. Odums was an All-CIAA linebacker at N.C.Central. “We’re not going to sit back on our heels with Tayrone as our defensive coordinator,’’ said Fobbs. “He likes to run that hard-nosed, aggressive, run to the football style of defense. He has the kind of attitude about playing defense that you want to rub off on your players.” Jackson was an assistant at Western Carolina for six years before coming to N.C. A&T. During his playing career, he earned All-ACC honors at tight end for Florida State in 1998. He played in two bowl games during his career that had an impact on which team would be crowned the national champion. catamountsports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/jackson_myron00.htmlRobinson is a 2007 graduate of Bethune-Cookman. He played outside linebacker during his four-year career.

What makes Robinson, the resent graduate of BC qualified to coach on the college level?? must have got him on the cheap. but how loyal will he be when we line up against bcu? dude just graduated not long ago. i think we could have found an aggie grad to fill that role...

Hayes went to Central and wanted to beat them more than any school on the schedule. Small coached at Hampton and now he's at FAMU... with Hayes. I believe that Willie Jeffries first job after SCSU was at A&T. Even Glen Mason (why in the world doesn't he have a coaching job somewhere) cried when his Minnesota team beat his alma mater, Ohio State. But he still made sure he won! Although I could never take a position that would put me on the sideline opposite A&T, dude has to be loyal to his paycheck before being loyal to his alma mater.
That being said, I also think we could have found an Aggie grad to fill that role. That being said, any recent grads haven't learned under good coaches, point blank. Anybody who just graduated and wasn't redshirted won six games in four years and was a part of the worst four years of defense in school history.

i agree with you dooms, you make a good point about that paycheck.
i don't have a problem with us having coaches that are alums from other rival meac schools. its just that four of the last five years dude was banging heads against our aggies. i just think its hard to switch loyalties only one year removed from despising us.
i think he'll do fine for us against everybody except bcu...

If McKenzie can establish a one of the four kids he has to work with as a consistent viable QB who doesn't turn it over and can make the throws when he needs too, we'll be very effective. I do like his offensive scheme or at least the little bit we got to see of it in the spring.
I don't know if that will case oleschool when it comes to Odum playing against BCC.
Odum and "Shine" didn't necessarily part as friends when "Shine" caught wind that Odum had interviewed for the DC job up here.
When Odum didn't get the DC job down there for a less proven guy when Norfolk's coach left , that became a major rift that stuck in his craw for a while. This pick was a no-brainer for Fobbs, a virtural gift. At least by anyone's measure, although not perfect, we have a far, far better situtation on the sidelines with far more experienced coordinators with proven track records on this level going into this season than the previous two years.
