You should write an open letter and post it on the main board.

Wheeler is going to make it work and going to the BOT was the first step. I was there and the thing that stuck out to the board the most was the Athletic Budget. We are really scrapping the bottom of the barrel. ... I'll find me numbers, but I can say this... $1000 athletic fee right now looks mighty reasonable if it fully funds athletics and ties into "Student Wellness" Go Wheeler!!!... I'm writing my letter to Velma recconmending him for the job!!! What are the students paying for athletic fees now? Are you calling for $1,000.00 for athletic fees per semester or for the year ($500.00 per semester)?

Listening to this, I get the sense that the Board is really out of touch in regards to athletics. Its my belief previous ADs were not effective at educating the board on athletic issues and their dependencies. There have been two or three good ADs in the past but they were hamstrung by people in the Dowdy Building. A comprehensive fundraising plan for Athletics has to come from the Chancellor similar to his academic scholarship strategy. Once the plan has been drawn up, a public announcement should come from Chancellor Battle and then have the Athletic Department and Development Office implement the plan.

There have been two or three good ADs in the past but they were hamstrung by people in the Dowdy Building. Curious, who are the two or three? Just for clarity sake, I didn't say we haven't had good ADs, just that I "believe" they were not able to persuade school leaders to support their athletic plans. Along with that, I have said on many ocassions that our school leaders are ineffective. I still believe this to be true.

I agree with you Thrilla.
I believe that many of our school leaders' (past and current) communications skills are ineffective. Therefore, no momentum is generated within key constituents to bring about change that is needed. We are consistently stuck on looking at reasons not to execute vs. the reason to execute, be it athletics or academics. Sure we make gains, but we allow selfishness (within alumni as well as our leaders) to divide.

People at A&T can give you a million reasons why its too hard to do their job effectively. Not many people are able to think really creatively and politic to get what they need. I feel they often use the red tape and lack of resources as a crutch.

And that type of mindset (along with other factors) limits our successes - both on the playing fields and in the classroom.

I'm confident Wheeler has the skills to turn us around. At this point in time, I'm not confident in the support of alumni or our leaders to provide him the resources he needs.
