TWO MORE LIONS MAKE AFL JUMP Date: 4/23/2008 10:13:45 AM
COLUMBUS, GA (April 22, 2008) – The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association are proud to announce that Offensive Lineman Monreko Critttenden (6’5 385, Auburn) and Rickie Lewis (6’3 268, North Carolina A&T) have earned two-day tryouts with the AFL’s Los Angeles Avengers and Orlando Predators respectively.
After going un-drafted in 2004, the former Auburn Tiger signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens where he would spend two seasons with the club. Monreko re-signed with the Lions after anchoring a line that led the WIFL in rushing. This season, Crittenden has been a part of a Lions line that has only allowed 8 sacks in 5 games.
After graduating from North Carolina A&T, Rickie Lewis attended mini-camp with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and spend the 2006 season with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders. This season, Lewis is second in the AIFA in sacks with 6 and sixth in tackles for loss with 6.5.
Crittenden and Lewis add to the current string of success that Lions players have garnered this past season. The two make the 7th and 8th Lion to have earned tryouts with clubs from the AFL. Earlier this season, Wide Receiver Anthony Merritt earned tryouts with the AFL’s Colorado Crush and Defensive Back Damian Daniels spent significant time with the AFL’s Georgia Force.
“As tough as it may be to lose quality players through the years, it is our duty as an organization and coaching staff to get our players to the next level,” says General Manager Jeff Gonos. “We wish them all the best of luck at the next level.”
