Aggies 4 IN THE FOURTH INNING!!!
Aggies jumped out to a to lead early, only to see the Davidson hitters take batting practice against the guys we have on the bump. It's embarrassing.

I don’t think it will matter who Coach puts in the game from the bullpen. Davidson’s putting aluminum on the ball. They have 10 base hits already with 3 home runs thru 4
SMH.
The conference tournament can be a goal for 2025.

When a team collects 14 hits & scores 11 runs, that usually equates to a win.
Not with our pitching staff.
Bright spots:
Canyon Brown & Tatsunori Negishi continue to swing it.
Tré Williams is solid, is swinging the stick well, AND MADE HIS PITCHING DEBUT,tossing a clean bottom of the 8th inning. He had decent velocity and some late movement on his fastball. He may turn into a nice 2-way player for us in the mold of Nick Rogers who got as high as AA in the Royals organization as a pitcher. Nick was a 3rd baseman & RHP who could run it up there in the mid 90's consistently.
Cam Jackson went 4-4 with 3 RBI & made a spectacular catch in the 8th, robbing a Davidson batter of what would have been their EIGHTH home run of the game.
Jesus be a fence.

A few of us baseball alums, although exceptionally proud of the War Boys & the early success, issued a warning about "fools gold." Here's what I mean:
We opened the season with a nice sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore, & a 3-game sweep against eastern illinois, a team that made a NCAA regional appearance a season ago.
But ...
UMES is 0-34. YES, O-FER SEASON.
Eastern Illinois is 13-23.
Although we went 6-0 against season opening opponents, their players put the ball in play, oftentimes with hard hit line drives, but right at Aggie fielders.
Fools Gold
The velocity was low then, but we made defensive plays. Of our pitchers, I think only Delisi, Ortiz, Daniels, and maybe Poris can touch 90. On the high/mid-major D1 level, 86-88 is batting practice, which is what teams have been doing to us here lately.
Further, & to answer your question with specificity, pitching is always ahead of hitting EARLY in the year. Typically, warmer weather & entry into conference play is when the bubbles begin to appear on the pancake, & that's exactly what happened this season. By the time we opened conference play in Charleston, the scouting reports were out on us, & have been spot on.
Now, hitters have figured us out, know our pitching routine & quirks, & sit back, keep their back leg loaded, & let loose on our 82mph stuff.
Tonight was a prime example. Davidson is 17-22 & 4-8 in the A10, but our lack of velocity guys made their batters look like the Yankees with Judge, Stanton, & McCann.
Coach needs to hit the LEGIT jucos HARD, like Gaston College & those in Florida, scour the portal, and check out the Latino scene. Top high school talent won't consider us, & I think you know why. Their daddies can't bring themselves to tell jim bob, ed earl, and tucker abner that the boy he's been bragging on since he was 5 is going to "a black school" & would rather walk-on at ECU, Wingate, Campbell, ECU, & lenoir-rhyne.
We need some legit pitchers NOW. Coach needs to leave Catawba Valley Community College & Mid-Atlantic Transmission & Mortuary Science Institute alone & get us some help, not now, BUT RIGHT THE FUGHAZI NOW!!!

I know the coaching staff is probably doing everything they can with the current talent on our roster, but it is pretty disheartening to not be able to win a game even when you score in the double digits.
At this point in the season the rotation should be well-established and there should be no doubt about which pitchers can get you outs.
If the same relievers are constantly blowing leads, maybe we need to try a different approach where we move some starters to the bullpen or something. I dont know; but what we are doing now is not working.

Great question! Here's what happens to us:
Our pitchers usually lead with a 2/4 seam fastball. If it's a strike, it will be followed with another. Depending on the count, the batter will see a waste pitch if our guy is ahead 0-2. A short slider or cut fastball in the dirt to get him to chase.
NOW...If our pitcher is behind 2-0 or 3-1, they NEED to throw a strike, and odds are that they'll throw the pitch that they trust the most. Opposing hitters know this from the scouting report (and baseball instincts) and look for a fastball OR a straight change. Given the lack of velo from the guys, if a batter knows that a "1" is coming OR his "best pitch," which he's shown to previous hitters when he's behind in the count, they sit back, keep their back side loaded, and, as OUR announcer said on Saturday and the Davidson guys said last night, they "tee off" because "It looks like a beach ball out there."
I know coach has a plan, and I agree that he and his guys recruit and make offers. The problem is the impact pitchers and hitters choose to go elsewhere, like the high/mid-major PWI or even D2 or even Juco to remain draft eligible. Ben can recruit, as a guy we signed a few years ago by the name of Marc Church is an eyelash away from the major league roster. He's on the DL now, and will probably get a June callup. He signed with us, but got drafted, got a nice signing bonus, and signed a contract.
We know that we will need a hitter to replace Negishi, as he's one and done with us. We believe that Canyon Brown will get drafted. If he does, he'll sign, depending on the round and the worth of the pick. Tre Williams has a chance, as he's athletic, can hit, and can play 8 positions on the field. The talent is there, Aggies, the depth of pitching is not.

And with the way kids are throwing out their arms at younger ages now, it's getting harder to find healthy pitchers that are good with their placement of the ball. If we can't find guys that can consistently throw 90+ without needing Tommy John surgery, we got to find kids that can throw quality curve balls and off-speed pitches. Either way, this is still a multi-year project that I believe we're ahead of schedule on. |
