I'm happy to read that he plans to stay involved with the university.

This could have been worded better: Agreed. I cringed when I read it.

This could have been worded better: Agreed. I cringed when I read it. Yeah, there should've been more context added to the statement, but...

This could have been worded better: that attitude might explain why he pulled us out of the meac...

It just highlights the fact that, despite the numerous accomplishments during his tenure, Chancellor Martin has never mastered the art of effective communication.
If being in East Greensboro is such a cause of concern, why do we make a point to include that location in every official press release we send out?
For one, Greensboro is not some sprawling metropolis. You can get to everywhere in the city within 15 minutes. Thus criminals live all over the city and crime happens everywhere. Hell, the Southside is probably 10 times worst than what is considered the East right now. Likewise, there are plenty of thugs and gangs in West Greensboro.
What he is trying to say is that most of the safety issues that have been associated with the university actually took place elsewhere, away from campus. But like I said, there was a much better way he could have deflected blame than to just say East Greensboro.

As a parent with 6 grandkids, this may be more about the Chancellor having to worry about student safety in our community. We've had several students shot and killed in recent years and I'd hate to have the responsibility of delivering that bad news to their parents. His comments may be more about the frustration of not being able to change the community as he expanded the University.

What community? The entire city of Greensboro has crime and violence.

What community? The entire city of Greensboro has crime and violence. I "think", to MB1969's point, if A&T would have been in North, South, East or West and the things that happened had happened he would have said the same thing about whatever area. It has to be a TERRIBLE thing to have to deal with the death of student...mostly their parents. I know I forbid my kids from going to parties in the Cottages. That said, only he knows exactly what he meant. Maybe someone will ask him to clarify at some point.

Nobody gave Chancellor Martin a script and said hey, you need to recite these specific words. He is a 70-plus year old man who is capable of expressing his own thoughts.
Historically, the phrase East Greensboro has always been code word for "where the black folk live". That is why we include the location at the start of every official press release because we are trying to say we are proud to represent the black community in Greensboro.
That, however, is an archaic mindset because in 2024 black folk live in every corner of the city. Crime happens everywhere and when young people are looking for excitement, they will always gravitate to a risk-filled environment. There was a incident two weeks ago where A&T students gathered on the Southside for a block party and 15 people got hit by a car.
That was probably about 10 minutes away from campus but that was not in East Greensboro.

To be fair, the Chancellor did explain in detail his regret and WFMY seemingly aired the entire comment, seemingly.

This is the point of talking points. Even the most seasoned leaders should have tps.

This is the point of talking points. Even the most seasoned leaders should have tps. You gotta have somebody on staff to prepare those talking points. Do you believe we have somebody who is really capable of doing that?
