Raleigh investor Lee Roberts named interim chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill
A week after Kevin Guskiewicz announced his departure from UNC-Chapel Hill, his interim replacement has been named.
And he's a Blue Devil.
UNC system President Peter Hans on Friday named Lee Roberts as interim chancellor of the state's flagship university, beginning Jan. 12. Roberts is a current member of the UNC system Board of Governors, but otherwise has no prior experience in administration at the college level. He was previously the state budget director under Republican Gov. Pat McCrory and is managing partner at SharpVue Capital in Raleigh.
In addition to this time on the Board of Governors, Roberts has served on the State Board of Community Colleges and has taught public budgeting as an instructor at Duke University for the past five years.
Roberts graduated from Duke University in 1990 with a degree in political science. He went on to earn a law degree from Georgetown University.
The UNC system, in a statement Friday, said Roberts "brings broad experience in public policy and leadership of complex organizations," to his role as the university's interim president.
"Lee Roberts is a patient leader, a generous listener, and someone raised with the values of public service," Hans said in a statement. "He knows how to find common ground on challenging issues, and he brings out the best in everyone around him. He’s deeply committed to the university, and I’m excited to work alongside him in supporting the great work happening at Carolina."
"Public higher education is one of North Carolina’s greatest strengths, and I’m honored to play a role in serving the nation’s first and finest public university," Roberts said in a statement. "Chancellor Guskiewicz and his team have done extraordinary work, and I’m excited to continue supporting the dedicated scholars, staff, and students at Carolina."
Roberts is replacing Guskiewicz, who, after a decades-long career at UNC that included more than four years as chancellor, will soon step down to become president of Michigan State University, where he will see a significant salary increase.
Guskiewicz's departure has been linked to tension between him and the UNC Board of Trustees.
Earlier this year, the UNC faculty and students — and even Guskiewicz — appeared caught off guard by the trustees' decision to start a new School of Civic Life and Leadership. Later, after Guskiewicz announced UNC would provide free tuition to underprivileged students, members of the Board of Governors sharply criticized the timing of the decision since it came soon after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down affirmative action in college admissions in a case involving UNC.
The university's two most recent chancellors before Guskiewicz also left after tumultuous times. Holden Thorp resigned in September 2012 after a tenure that was dominated by a scandal involving the football team. Carol Folt followed, and in January 2019 she abruptly announced she would have the Silent Sam monument removed from campus and then retire at the end of the academic year. The Board of Governors responded by shortening her stay to two weeks.
Guskiewicz stepped into the role permanently in December 2019, after months of filling the position on an interim basis. Before taking on the chancellor job, Guskiewicz, a neuroscientist, had spent more than two decades at UNC and was previously the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
UNC-Chapel Hill and the UNC system will launch a search for a permeant hire to fill the chancellor's role in the coming months – although many insiders are saying Roberts is at the top of the list. This process will involve a 13-member committee that will deliver a slate of candidates to the UNC Board of Trustees, which will then provide Hans with at least three candidates to consider. Hans will advance a final nominee to the UNC system Board of Governors for approval.
Roberts' SharpVue Capital is in the process of trying to acquire the Bald Head Island ferry system in a potential $67 million deal.
