NATIONALLY RANKED:
Ranked 13th in FCS Preseason Top 25 - Eagles return 12 All-MEAC performers following 10-win campaign that included two top-25 victories and an HBCU national championship.
DURHAM, N.C. β Coming off a 10-win campaign that included two top-25 victories and an HBCU national championship, North Carolina Central University is ranked 13th in the 2023 HERO Sports FCS Preseason Top 25.
In 2022, NCCU won its first MEAC football championship since 2016, and defeated No. 5 Jackson State University, 41-34, in an overtime thriller in the Cricket Celebration Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The victory delivered the university's fourth HBCU national championship title, joining the company of those captured in 1954, 2005 and 2006.
The 2022 NCCU Eagles became just the third team in school history to win 10 games in a season and earned the program's highest NCAA Division I-FCS national ranking at No. 17 in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Coaches' Poll.
Under the direction of 2022 MEAC Coach of the Year Trei Oliver, the Eagles celebrated non-conference FCS triumphs over North Carolina A&T, Tennessee Tech, No. 25 New Hampshire, and No. 5 Jackson State.
For the upcoming 2023 season, NCCU is projected to return 12 All-MEAC performers, including five first team all-conference honorees. Headlining the group are senior quarterback Davius Richard, the 2022 MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, and senior defensive back Khalil Baker, the 2022 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year.
NCCU's other All-MEAC returners are senior running back Latrell Collier, junior center Torricelli Simpkins III, senior kicker Adrian Olivo, junior receiver Devin Smith, junior defensive lineman Jaden Taylor, junior linebacker Jaki Brevard, senior defensive back Manny Smith, junior running back J'Mari Taylor, junior defensive lineman Christian Smith, and senior return specialist/defensive back Brandon Codrington.
In the Athlon Sports' FCS Preseason Top 25, NCCU is ranked 24th.

They're gonna leave below 13. Facts! I'm already sick of all this attention they are getting by playing nobody... c'mon, now. i get it that they're the buzzards who are arch rivals. but let's at least be honest with ourselves. they beat "us" last season, they beat a "ranked" new hampshire ( caa team on the road) last season, and they beat a previously unbeaten and "ranked" jsu coach prime team in the cb. so unless we consider "ourselves" as well as caa member new hampshire "nobodies" (which i don't), let's give credit where credit is due. you and i may not like it, but they're getting attention because last season they did exactly what we "used to do" (beat ranked teams and win the cb) which will garner far more attention and national publicity than we'll ever get in this new conference unless we win a national championship. the attention they're now getting "used to be" the same attention that we "used to get". " publicity-wise" relative to last season, i rather be in their shoes (conference champs, bcf national champs, & fcs nationally "ranked") than ours...

Yea yea, they had our playbook and our former coach didn't know how to adjust for some odd reason, but they weren't world beaters imo. They also got put to sleep by Campbell which you forgot to throw in there. And JSU was and always were just front runners on paper.
Put Central in the Big South last year where they would have had to gone through us (during conference play), Campbell, Gardner Webb, versus only having to worry about SC State in the MEAC. That is not what we had to do in the MEAC. We had to face FAMU, BCU, SCSU, and Central all to get to the Celebration bowl. It's not apples to apples.

I give them MUCH credit for what they did last year and I was pulling for them against Deion/JSU even though they're our biggest rival. They were a better team from the previous few years...especially at QB. That said, I believe they only beat us because Jalen got the Rona in fall camp and we had to start a QB that had never started a college game and hadn't started a game for at least 2 yrs. That said, he barely missed a few receivers that would have made the game much different. To go along with that we didn't have our best DE and an important backup DE/DT due to eligibality issues. They takin' an L on 9/9!

They takin' an L on 9/9! We had 357 total yards of offense Bruh, NCCU had a total of 269 yards against us 269 and we still lost!!!! They had 69 rushing and 200 passing!!! We sacked their QB 3 times compared to 0 on our QB. Of course we had more penalty yardage than them πππ

I wonder how our Defense will look under the New Coach? I dont think that we will miss a beat.
There is nothing like a NCCU Crowd at the Tailgate. It's been a min. This is setting up nicely...

They were more efficient in scoring than we were (short field on blocked punt for one) and those penalties extending their drives hurt bad too. A couple more of Zack's missed passes would have changed things. And Leslie barely missed getting a foot down for a TD on one.
