A&T is not the school of the past...I love how the school is evolving and becoming a safe haven for African Americans with different interest. Anime Aggies: Student group at NC A&T hosts first convention for Black fans to nerd out hen Solomon Aladekoba was in ninth grade, he saw Naruto at a McDonald’s. He had just gotten out of class and ran to the convention center in DC when the world around him began to change. Characters from different manga and anime filled the streets, mingling here and there, getting lunch. It was surreal. “We just lost our minds,” Aladekoba says. “It was the coolest thing I have ever experienced. Just seeing everyone nerding out in their various little groups, I was like, Oh, I’m with my people. This is dope.” Ever since then, Aladekoba has been chasing that dragon. In the last decade he’s been to three anime conventions; this Saturday, he’s helping to host one on his home campus. Aladekoba, a sophomore at NC A&T State University, is the treasurer of the Anime Aggies, a club that’s more than 350 members deep. Founded by Rose Jackson in late 2021, the group is carving out a place for the HBCU’s students to celebrate their fandom in a safe space. This Saturday, they will host their very first anime convention on campus. “It originally started as a small thing for people to come and talk about anime,” Jackson says. “In our community, the Black community, liking anime is kind of frowned upon. So I wanted to open that gateway and say, ‘You can like what you like,’ and start a community to make friendships, open up the conversation.” triad-city-beat.com/anime-aggies/

“In our community, the Black community, liking anime is kind of frowned upon. Why? Its considered nerdy and not something that black people are into. Lets be honest...TV, rappers and athletes determine what are cool activities in the black community. And on TV you dont see black people talking about Anime, Dungeons and Dragons and other activities.

Nah, Dungeon and Dragons is where I draw the line. I'm all for diversity but we don't need that level of nerdness on A&T's campus.

ncatregister.com/20977/theculture/skaters-takeover-n-c-ats-campus-welcome-neomoblife/A new skater organization on campus, known as Neomoblife, began as a small skating group of four. Now they are creating a space to share with others and expand on what it means to be a Black skater. Founded by David Cruz, Jordan Brodie, Howard Dawkins and Jose Villa Romero, in October, the group created Neomoblife to skate, service and educate their community. Romero and Dawkins’ inspiration for this organization came from their experience with College Daze and another skate group. “Howard’s skate club was the inspiration for the beginning of making this group like a school organization,” Dawkins said. ”College Daze’s inspiration comes [from] getting to see how they plan events out and focus on what the people on campus want.” Their goal is to change the image of skaters on campus by getting true acknowledgment and helping to create a bigger legacy.

www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2023-03-24/nc-a-t-state-university-hosts-1st-anime-convention-for-black-fans/.196284The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will host a convention this Saturday specifically for Black anime fans. The Anime Aggies Convention is organized by the student club by the same name. You do not need to be a member of the club to participate in the convention, although you must purchase tickets in advance online. Tickets cost US$5. NC A&T State University is a historically Black university. Rose Jackson, who founded the club in 2021, commented that she created the community as a way for fellow Black anime fans to celebrate their fandom without stigma. " In our community, the Black community, liking anime is kind of frowned upon. So I wanted to open that gateway and say, 'You can like what you like,' and start a community to make friendships, open up the conversation," she said. She recalled that in high school, she was told that anime was "weird" or "too white" a hobby.

People who like anime and Dungeons & Dragons are considered nerds in every community; not just the black community.
