Is that because we just dont have the staff leaders who are able to design a good stand routine? no. its just what certain "band heads" expect in the stands. They want to see a certain Power/Aggressive/F.U. type of mentality

Why do you think we haven't been able to display that type of power/aggressiveness in the stands?

Is that because we just dont have the staff leaders who are able to design a good stand routine? No, not at all, it's just a changing of the guard and times. See, when you say stand battle, that means a 5th quarter, if you will...which means a band plays their best music to show their musicality. As I think back to the Hodge era, he would make the band learn like 5-6 marches just to play in a 5th quarter. It showed discipline based on the difficulty of the march itself. So, keeping with that logic, A&T didn't play a march but, they played a song that could show their musicianship. But, it's a new day...now bands get in a 5th quarter or zero quarter and play rap songs or hook songs in order to play to the crowd. Also, A&T was told they would get the opportunity to play 2 songs then, they only got to play once. I'm sure they had something else to play but, they didn't want to come out and just play only rap songs. It's a band battle and they are not won by playing rap songs...come on. This isn't to say that A&T would have won a 5th quarter battle against Southern though...I'm pointing out the mindset when it comes to a stand battle when you are dealing with a SWAC band versus MEAC now Big South!

They're great on the field, but they left a lot to be desired in the stands. If you watch a few of the YouTube reaction videos none of them knew wtf we were playing in the stands lol. It was our first outing so judgement is reserved. THE ACOUSTIC was awful! Every Band that played, you actually had to "GUESS THAT SONG"

Couldn't recognize the music? Was anyone commenting on the You Tube videos over 30? I guess a college band shouldn't bother catering a little more to college students....Granted we're not bad, it was just an observation. A&Ts marching band had us partying during my years of attendance 05-10(Engineering Major don't judge me lol) 2005 youtu.be/xA4S6a6R2-s

Don't miss my point...sure you are playing to the crowd at all times. But, it wasn't like the crowd was that into what Southern played versus A&T. The observation was they were louder which they are supposed to be since they are bigger. But, "I feel for you" by Chaka Kahn is not a bad musical choice. That's the problem with the new school they don't respect the old school or pay enough homage to old school music. They rather listen to rap songs that has sampled the old school music. It's crazy if you ask me...

If Feel For You literally came out 37 years ago. I promise you kids today do not appreciate that song like we do.
Maybe time to rethink the entire playlist. Nostalgia can be deceiving sometimes.

Do you realize how many people that were in Houston that were over the age of 40 that marched in their college's marching band? It was a lot of old school bandheads there...remember that is marchingband country. From Atlanta to Houston is band country, that's why the competition was moved from Charlotte. How old is As We Lay...30+ years old but, it took house when they were on the field. Don't make excuses for the new school when there are none.

A&T did great with the show and song selections at the last Charlotte BOTB. Keep in mind we both agreed that everything was fine according to MEAC battle standards. Being in the battle with SU, JSU, Tnsu etc in SWAC land just changed some of the stand battle expectations. NSU tends to do well with adjusting between the different styles.

Why do you think we haven't been able to display that type of power/aggressiveness in the stands? We (our band director) does not take an aggressive approach to bandsmanship. His forte is showmanship.

In my opinion, we (A&T)tend to play by the rules while SWAC bands don't care about rules, especially when it comes to a battle. So, what I mean is, after A&T performed they were escorted to their buses to return to the hotel when in actuality they were supposed to go back in the stands and play again. Well, Ruff being the gentleman he is went on and left. On the flipside, Southern, Tenn State, Jackson and Talladega's band directors would have been pissed because, they didn't get a chance to play their last song. That's the mindset that they have...to the average "Joe", it's no big deal, it's just one song. To them, that one song means everything. That's the difference between SWAC and MEAC.

I love our studio sound and 4K production, but this gives an outsiders perspective of how we sounded against Southern (my favorite band in the SWAC) in the stands. If you read the comments, the unbiased posters they gave us a lot a credit for our sound, and some even gave us the nod which says a lot coming from SWAC fans.

If that's the case, I'm with Dr. Ruff 100 percent on this one. If the event hosts tell you that your time is up, then we need to comply. You dont get any cool points for acting uncivilized.

It was our first outing so judgement is reserved. Its always been stated, MEAC bands were never really "Stand battle" ready when compared to what the SWAC brings out. But they will hold their own with quality arrangements. I remember when we were known as a stand band. Why not both?
