A Publix worker asked me if I went to “N-CAT” recently. SMH. Your response should have been "NO". For some reason, many folks don't seem to respect their "Brand" or want to continue to grow it, which is their history and legacy. Other cultures don't do that. Until we begin to correct some of these young folks one-on-one when they say that, it will not begin to cease.

My homegirl went to Howard. After I graduated and moved to DC we went out to lunch and she kept saying NC A&T. I told her just say A&T. She said what about the other A&Ts? I said which one? After she went through her mental rolodex she realized AIN'T BUT ONE A&T.
Same thing happened at Howard Law. I was talking to a couple of 3Ls that went to Texas A&M and I said "I guess we're all Aggies, I'm an A&T Aggie though." They said don't you have to say what state? I said why, there's only one A&T. They said what about Prairie Vi..., no, Flori... no, Alaba..., dang, I guess you're right!
We are THE AYANTEE. Protect this house!!!!

You know what....this sets things up for alternative jerseys in the future. Can you imagine having a football uni combo with the Lock on the helmet and jerseys having “AYANTEE” across the chest? Maybe “NC” on both sleeves? Y’all forgive me...I been stuck in the damn house too long!

Leave the lock and don't try to change what doesn't need to be changed. A&T has always been known as A&T to true Aggies and NCA&T to opponents and out of state fans . But that crap on the football jerseys has to go period. The A&T lock and Aggies on the front of the jerseys send a clear and distinct message of who we are . Just leave it alone.

Man, I use to have an entire speech with the counts of the number of A&Ms, HUs, SUs, TSUs, and conclude with but there is only one AYANTEE.

I did not care for that movie for precisely that reason. Well, there were other reasons but that was the main one. It's kinda a shame we have to protect our brand from misuse our own damned employees, but so be it.

That movie is near 20 years old. It bothered me at the time, but I eventually got over it....
....Truth be told - we're gonna have to get some stronger spines. Like it or not, when we move from the MEAC to the Big South, there's gonna be a huge demographics change with respect to the eyeballs that will be on us. With that will come unfamiliarity with our school brand and questions on how we should be referred to on (and off) air.
I can see it now...."North Carolina A&T State University - boy, that sure takes a long time to say.....can't we just call y'all "NCAT" and keep it moving?"
How about our name on a Big South televised broadcast......will they spell out North Carolina A&T or will they give the NCAT abbreviation?
I anticipate this to happen during the "unfamiliar phase." The question is when the "unfamiliarity" with our school fades, what will they call us then.....and will we tell them (at that time) that what we're being called ain't cool?
I'm not Nostradamus - but I can virtually predict there will be some abbreviations and name-calling our school will get that we ain't gonna like as our footprint becomes demographically larger. What are we gonna do about it?

We'll correct them firmly the first time.
I still remember the jackass from the game against Charleston Southern last year purposely calling us AT&T as the game got out of hand for them. That's the type of thing we simply shouldn't allow imo.

That's the type of thing we simply shouldn't allow imo. I agree. We also need to check these young people who have decided to attend AYANTEE, from coming to the university thinking "we need to make some generational changes". NO NO!! Respect our Institution's History and Legacy and stature among the other great HBCUs. This respect includes school colors, school branding and its' traditional abbreviated name i.e. AYANTEE, "T", "TEE", The Interlocking Letters and NCA&T. When being formal, use the correct name, North Carolina A&T State University. Students and Alums have to embrace our History and Legacy. It is sacred, and has passed from one generation to the next since 1891. Not one generation alone owns the Greatness of AYANTEE or the right to demand changes. Forgive me for my rant of the month. Too much Thunderbird from the block. Can't change that tradition.

I went into a Lowe's here in Tallahassee on last Saturday morning with one of my A&T shirts on, and a young Black female cashier named Chloe asked me if I went to "N-CAT." She said that she really wanted to go to A&T when she was finishing high school and did apply, but her Mom told her that it was too far away. I explained the correct pronunciation to her, and she seemed like she sincerely understands. We actually talked about A&T for about 3 minutes.
And that's not the first time that I've heard it from young folks here, either.
She told me that three of her former high school classmates from Chiles High School are Aggies and that they love it.
