The Hampton Delegation issues a statement to AggieLand and the Conference formerly known as the MEAC. Aggies we welcome you to the plantation, your quarters are over here far from Massa's cabin. As you can see we (Hampton) are near the Big House and ya'll will have to work hard in the fields to get to where we are, LOL Kidding.
All seriousness we hate to see A&T leave the MEAC because like all alums who went to PWI's who seriously care about HBCU's we want to see them flourish because they represent them ethnically. I personally hate to see you leave the MEAC due to the fact that the MEAC needs you more than you need them. I love to see your pride while playing fellow family(MEAC) members and to see the spirit of unity which makes it a uniquely beautiful " African/Black " experience. The culture that emanates out of Corbett center during timeouts by the students, crowd and opposing fans is indescribable. This phenomenon is an " American " treasure, one in which we don't value enough.
Unfortunately you got to " BIG " for the rest of your brothers and sisters and you had to leave. The quote in the Spike Lee movie " Malcolm X " from Elijah Muhammad. " Be aware of those cameras and your own brotha's will be jealous, hostile..... go slowly ". I took that quote to heart because I feel it everywhere, at my workplace where my NSU, Howard, Morgan and FAMU co-workers constantly look at us with a little mockery and disdain. Aggies this will be real and you will feel this as well, probably not as bad as we encountered because we took that a$$ whippin first. I felt when Hampton left the MEAC it reminded me of that " Malcolm X Field Negro" speech of when he said " the moderen house Negro wants to live near him. He'll pay three times as much as the house is worth just to live near his master and then brag about " I'm the only Negro out here ." That was the majority of the alums feelings once we made the move from the conference.
As we've had two full seasons to digest the move honestly most of us are ambivalent to the conference but we're not interested in rejoining the MEAC. Yes we miss the pride, the pageantry, the culture, the family and the vibe of being with people who look like you. But unfortunately the MEAC's model hasn't grown in football even though honestly I enjoy the Celebration Bowl and would love to see Hampton play in it. Basketball, I would say is pretty much equal but WInthrop can beat everyone in the MEAC and Big South.
Here are the issues that have affected our experience in the Big South. Aggies tune in here we go.
1.) Racist incident at one university for our women's program. One of our women's teams traveled to a Big South member for a sporting match and the contest became too competitive where the home team, head coach and attending crowd began to hurl racial slurs at our team. The situation spiraled out of control where our team chose not to continue the contest and the referee's were very ineffective. One thing I will give the Big South Conference credit for was tackling this issue head on and severely punishing the university responsible. A Lot of Hampton alums were afraid that you guys would bring this up as a " YOU see I toldja soo " moment. BUT to Hampton's Harvey machine this incident didn't make the papers nor did it reach that far outside of campus. I do know that some of you guys did hear about it and thank you for keeping it under wraps.
2.) Radford basketball game, It felt like the Big South is trying to force this as a makeshift rival. It isn't natural and most of the Radford students who are black stormed our campus to try and act as if this was NSU/Hampton. It wasn't and we didn't match their energy and unfortunately we loss in an Overtime buzzer beater while the Radford delegation acted as they were a part of the HBCU'sphere. Rivals are natural NSU, Howard and A&T feels like family you can't force it.
3.) Some of the worst behavior we've experienced came from the opposing " Black " players of Big South Programs. Case in Point Hampton played Campbell at home and their players from Campbell were making fun of the Hampton program as a lesser program " Ghetto " program. It was the QB who was a young ignorant black kid who after scoring a TD grabbed his crotch in front of the Hampton bench and basically defended the good ole boy's stance for the University. It reeked of " Hoppin Bob " in the movie " Life " the wretch who defended the " Get on the Line " Boss.
4.) The bad calls in the majority of the contest. We've already seen our fair share of it and we are " FED UP " and to be honest it's a main reason why many of our fans are upset with being in the conference.
5.) Its boring and to be honest a lot of these programs don't even come to each others games so don't think of them not showing up to your university as them not wanting to visit an HBCU. It's just that there are no traditional rivalries, Riq has visited a lot of away games only to feel unwelcome and bored.
What works for Hampton.
1.) The ESPNU package is amazing, we've seen every event from Volleyball, Soccer all the way to Football for a small price. It's great to come home and see your teams playing in a contest and not having to go to your school website to stream it from your laptop or your home PC.
2.) The Big South is leaps and bounds ahead of the MEAC in media and social media coverage. There are a lotof videos of our students which are sponsored by the Big South that I personally enjoy.
3.) Ain't no three, that's it.
