When I was in Greensboro Thursday I went to see the band and they will be fine. They will have good field show like all the previous years. Some sections are smaller then before but again it will be fine. Hopefully by the middle of the season the bands sound will mature more. All I want from the band is to be apart of the game day experience more. I agree...like I said, our staff makes lemonade out of lemons. I have no doubt they will put a good to great product on the field this season. I know someone posted a picture of the visitor side of the stadium at College of Charleston. Initially, I thought the band would take the whole side, well maybe not now. Just learned the other day that the A&T Band will not be traveling to College of Charleston. They are going to Duke!

The band battle in S.C. is on the same day as the fun fest. Will they participate in both?

We have a good band that is undervalued. I don’t agree with every decision but I am not running the program. SU, JSU, FAMU,TnSU and to some extent GSU have the history and branding but there is a new wave that includes A&T, PV, NSU, and BCU that have been challenging the status quo for awhile, and our staff do not get the props they deserve.

its seems to me that the bgmm "alumni" should be the most willing alums to donate to the band. i'm not a band head which is why i've pretty much stayed out of this discussion. but it seems to me that the administration has funded the bgmm in recent years. maybe not scholarships, but didn't we recently get brand new uniforms and brand new instruments on dr. martin's watch? and they are renovating a new band facility for the bgmm as well...

Being a former BGMM band member myself there are a lot of reasons I have heard. Some don't like the direction of the band, some don't like the band director, some are not educated on giving and who to give to, some want to give but say they don't have the funds for it, some feel that there are way to many programs to give to ( Aggie Alumni band, Elite 100, Blue and Gold Loyalty non profit and there maybe one more) I marched 2002- 2006 and that along is roughly around 400+ students that went through the band. The Leadership of those orgs just have to be consistent with reaching out and re engaging the BGMM alums on the reason why we should contribute.

Well, I cannot speak for the entire band alumni but, it's rough out here for a pimp. Some Folk are struggling just to save up to afford to make to homecoming let alone donate household funds. That's kind of what happened to the alumni band. I think there was an alumni band fee of approximately $150 then you have to pay to get in the game. Doesn't like much to some but, the others it matters. So, folk with families just figured to use the $150 toward the cost of the game. So, why shouldn't some of all alumni giving help the band since it's considered an auxiliary (Auxiliary Services)?

I firmly believe that our chancellor has a plan for the band. His number 1 priority is increasing research dollars and growing our endowment which helps with student recruitment.
After our capital campaign closes I expect him to focus on fundraising for other areas of the school that grow our brand. I’m thinking athletics and band will become the financial priority for the institution behind research initiatives.

The Leadership of those orgs just have to be consistent with reaching out and re engaging the BGMM alums on the reason why we should contribute. I hear these same "excuses " from A&T Alumni when asked why they don't give back to the University. And they are all true. But I believe if you really want to give, you will find a way to give! I've spent nearly 50 years begging folks to give to A&T and I've annoyed a lot of folks with my begging. But I will not stop begging because the students need our financing help. HBCUs are awful at fundraising and A&T is no exception. We suck at it, from our complex online donation application to our confusing "develop " infrastructure. But despite these obstacles, our alumni should do better. I was no genius in school...in fact I barely graduated but that didn't stop me from finding ways to donate to A&T. When I couldn't find the right fund, I helped start one (Bill Clark Memorial Fund & Each One Reach One Band Scholarship). I don't want to minimize anyone's reason for not giving but I rather talk to alumni looking for a way to give. And if you want to give to the band, send me your email address and I'll send you our weekly newsletter.

Band alumni are like all HBCU alumni...they believe only "rich folks" can afford to donate. They're waiting on Oprah or Bill Gates to rescue us. But you don't have to be a former BGMM member to give to the band. Hell I donate to the band, football team, track and even the cheerleaders.
