Top question for each MEAC football program The top question for every MEAC squad heading into the 2017 football season.
by Steven J. Gaither June 6, 2017
Its still officially spring, but the minds of millions of college football fans are eagerly set towards the fall. We’re three months from the official start of the HBCU football season, but it will be here before you know it (at least that’s what I tell myself). We’ll kick off our summer long 2017 HBCU football preview with a look at the top question for each MEAC program roughly 90 days before the start of the season. For the rest of the story: hbcugameday.com/2017/06/06/top-question-for-every-meac-football-team-2017/

The million dollar question?
North Carolina A&T: Can the Aggie passing game pick up the slack for departed stars?
Not only will A&T have to replace the face of its program (not to mention the MEAC and HBCU football in general) in Tarik Cohen, it will have to replace the production put up by his running mate Denzel Keyes. The wideout from Kinston caught an A&T record 25 touchdown passes in his career (including 10 as a senior) and was a weapon that teams had to watch as closely at the goal line as they did Cohen.
Elijah Bell thrived opposite Keyes as a freshman last year, catching 35 passes for an average of 18 yards per catch and scoring eight touchdowns. This season he’ll be the top target of quarterback Lamar Raynard, who showed progress as the season wore on, but who won’t have Cohen to hand the ball to or Keyes to dump it to. Can Bell and Raynard guide A&T to continued success in a post Cohen-Keyes era?

ALSO: Can our secondary show up to the party? that's a much bigger question than losing cohen and keyes...

The OL is the least of my worries as we have depth and experience.

Every second and third tier college football program in the nation is wondering the same questions...can we replace last year's stars (fill in a name here), will our offensive (defensive) line play better, will our DB's be able to cover anybody and do we have a QB that can help win games? The top PWI programs have less of a worry because that have the funds, reputation and resources to take care of those questions but we don't! Will we have a tough time this year winning games without last year's stars...absolutely but we will find a way to win. Because that's what Aggies Do! It may not be as exciting and historic as in the past three years but we will win. And we will discover new "stars" to replace the old stars. They may not show up on ESPN or go viral on YouTube but they will get the job done.
Like everyone else on this site, I have a thousand questions about this team and I can't wait to see them in action. Who knows, maybe this year we will do the impossible...beat NCCU for the outright championship. That's really the only question I have!

But they make no mention that our DB allowed yrd in Passing stat finish dead last. That lets me know they have no clue. Our RB replacement and our Receiving crew are good. As a matter of fact I think our Receiving crew are better than last year. Its funny they never mention four out of 5 offensive starters are returning that huge.

ALSO: Can our secondary show up to the party? Our defense has to put more pressure on the qb. Our db's have a tough job trying to cover their man and keep one eye on the qb who often breaks long runs if no one is open. Sent from my SM-N910P using proboards

whatever the root cause of the problem is, the bottom line is that we need much better "pass defense", period. i'll let the coaches figure out whether the db's and/or the d-line is the root cause of our porous pass defense. i just want our "pass defense" fixed...

To answer Trues. What oleschool said. "We need better pass defense period". But as far as the pass rush, I didn't think we had a great pass rush because our d-linemen are mostly run stoppers. To get to the QB we had to blitz and everyone knows that. The problem to me was that our DBs were not good enough to cover if our blitzes were picked up. A good group of DBs can cover for 3.5 seconds. Ours could only cover for 2.5 seconds. Those actual numbers are made up, but you get my point.
