Well alright Aggies! Our underrated football team is 3-1 out of conference and it's time for MEAC play. For our first MEAC game, we will be heading up to the Nation's Capital to play Howard. Howard, coached by Flea is a team whose offense centers around their offense.
Howard is coming off a heartbreaking shoot out loss against Morgan State in the Urban League Classic 38-35. Howard's QB Greg McGhee threw for 229 yards on 16 of 35 passes and got 3 TD's rushing and tallied 74 yards. McGhee kept the team in the game after Morgan State was up 35-21 in the 3rd quarter. Now, McGhee is heralded as our Conference's best QB and his play Saturday supports that. It's unfortunate that his receivers drop passes and Howard's running game leaves plenty to be desired.
Now Howard's defense is honestly horrendous. They allowed Morgan State to score 38 points, earn over 230 yards rushing and over 180 yards passing.
Realistically, I believe Flea has some wrinkles in his gameplan for A&T. I would not be surprised if he allows the OC to place McGhee in many run option scenarios where is is rolling out of the pocket, threatening us to gain yardage with his feet. The Bison my run a hurry up offense and also throw many quick, short passes. Too bad our defense will have most of that bottled up. I also expect their defense to key into our rushing attack with Quick and Cohen. This is where our renewed chemistry in our passing game will be important.
We should be able to throw just well enough, at least to keep Howard playing honestly, leaving open running lanes for Cohen. They can't stop the run easily so completing passes, especially on third down will be key to keep McGhee off the field and keep Howard from hanging with us for more than a half.
To be completely honest, if we play within ourselves and complete key passes, we will drop over 30 points on Howard and win easily. This is the kind of game we should win by 14 or more points if we play well in all three phases of the game, especially special teams. Howard can score in bunched and if the Bison receivers can catch passes, they can be dangerous so our secondary must be prepared.
Another key factor for the game will be our OL. Howard will blitz and their front-4 can get pressure if unchecked. On paper, we are more physical than Howard is but we must be ready for them.
Overall, I love our chances in D.C.. I really feel that our passing game is starting to hit our stride and help us win games easily we struggled to win close or lost close last year.
What are your thoughts?
