Don't laugh, A&T has a former NBA assistant coach as head coach for men's basketball.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Titans have fired offensive coordinator Norm Chow after three seasons.
The move comes after the Titans failed to score a touchdown in their first postseason game since 2003. The Titans finished the season 10-6.
Tennessee was 10th in the AFC in total offense and points-per-game. They were 27th in the league for passing yards.
Chow was being considered for UCLA's head coaching job in December, but pulled his name from consideration to focus on the Titans run for the playoffs.
"I have decided not to pursue things further with UCLA at this time. My focus is on the Tennessee Titans and preparing our team for a chance at the playoffs," Chow said in a statement.
He said he appreciated UCLA's interest and the chance to speak about the job. UCLA went on to hire Rick Neuheisel.
Chow's coaching career began at Brigham Young University under head coach LaVell Edwards. Chow helped develop BYU's reputation as "Quarterback U." Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Robbie Boscoe, and Heisman winner Ty Detmer went through Chow's system.
BYU won the 1984 National Championship with Chow in charge of the offense.
Chow also found success at the University of Southern California. USC won the AP National Championship in 2003, and the BCS National Championship in 2004. Chow was credited with developing quarterbacks Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2002 and 2004, respectively.
The Titans had hoped Chow would have similar results with quarterback Vince Young. Chow's release comes after a dissapointing season for the Titans offense.
Chow's name has been attached to several coaching vacancies over the years in both the NFL and college ranks. He has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the Hawaii position left open by the departure of June Jones to SMU. Chow was born in Honolulu.
Chow's coaching history:
1973-1999 BYU Offensive Coordinator
2000 North Carolina State Offensive Coordinator
2001-2004 USC
2005-2008 Titans Offensive Coordinator
Chow played college football at the University of Utah from 1965 to 1967 as a starting offensive lineman.
